It's been well over two years, but the highly anticipated second season of The Empress has finally landed a release date on Netflix. On Sept. 27, two days shy of the show's official two-year anniversary, Netflix announced The Empress season 2 will be released on Friday, Nov. 22. As of this writing, that's less than two months away. The wait is nearly over!

The German-language historical drama series first premiered on Netflix back on Sept. 29, 2022. In the show's first four days of release on the platform, it managed to amass over 47 million hours watched and become one of the most-watch non-English language shows. The Empress also managed to put up a good fight against the behemoth Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Naturally, Netflix renewed the series for season 2 in November 2022, shortly after its release. It's been a long time coming, but Elisabeth of Austria is at long last reclaiming her throne, her crown, and her place on your Netflix watch list on Nov. 22. Along with the release date, Netflix also revealed a sneak peek teaser that offers a glimpse at the romance, intrigue, and power struggles to come.

For those who are unfamiliar and maybe missed the series the first time around, The Empress centers on a Bavarian princess who becomes an Austrian empress upon marrying Emperor Franz Joseph in the 1800s. In the first season, Sisi rebelled against what was expected of her and considered returning to Bavaria. However, at the end of the season, she reveals her pregnancy with Franz's baby.

While the season 1 finale definitely left the state of Sisi and Franz's relationship up in the air, the season 2 synopsis seems to suggest that the couple have remained together following the announcement of her pregnancy. In the second season, the couple faces new threats, new enemies, and new pressures as the throne's future hangs in the balance of every decision.

Read the official season 2 synopsis via Netflix for a closer look at what will be happening in the all-new episodes:

"The first crisis is barely over and the young couple wants to enjoy their fresh marital bliss when dark clouds gather over Schönbrunn Palace: Franz (Philip Froissant) unexpectedly faces a powerful adversary in Europe. And Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) comes under great pressure, because an heir to the throne is to secure the future of the empire as quickly as possible.

When fate strikes with all its power, the couple's love threatens to finally break apart. And Elisabeth must fight not only for her family, but also for the integrity of her soul..."

The first season of The Empress contained six episodes that were each about an hour in length. Netflix has not confirmed how many episodes will be featured in season 2, but we can presume that the season will follow suit and again contain six episodes. If you haven't watched season 1 or need a refresher after two years, there's still plenty of time to watch all six episodes of season 1 before Nov. 22.
