Netflix's new original dark comedy series The Decameron premiered on July 25, and once audiences start binge-watching all eight episodes, there's going to be a little something more surprising than its satiric sense of humor and no-holds-barred plot twists... The music!

Seemingly taking inspiration from Sofia Coppola's 2006 film Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst, The Decameron separates itself from the Black Plague era in which it's set (specifically, 1348) by also incorporating '80s and '90s pop-rock songs and other modern alternative songs. You would probably never start watching a medieval series and expect to hear Modest Mouse or Duran Duran, but The Decameron dares to defy expectations, even those of the sonic variety.

On top of some unexpected modern music sprinkled throughout each of the show's eight episodes, the series obviously contains score that still gives the viewer a sense of place for the 1300s. There's medieval score with plucky strings and melodic vocals over the instrumentals. Netflix released the official soundtrack album featuring score by Ruth Barrett on July 19.

The Decameron songs by episode

As mentioned above, Modest Mouse and Duran Duran are among the popular artists with songs featured in The Decameron. The first modern song, Depeche Mode's 1984 single "Master and Servant," plays a decent way into the very first episode, and it's quite a surprise. A pleasant one! Depeche Mode's song in episode 1 is followed by an Edwin Collins song from the '90s and a New Order track from the '80s.

While most of the songs are from decades ago, one of the most recent songs featured in the series is a 2009 song by Bat for Lashes. The rest of the catchy songs are mostly from the 1980s and 1990s. So you don't have to have your phone out to search for the songs as you hear them, we compiled each of the songs and listed them by episode. Find your favorites and add them to your playlist!
