Territory release date and everything we know so far
By Reed Gaudens
This fall, there's a brand new Netflix original series headed to our watch lists, and the streamer has pretty much already sold it to us as our next obsession. Netflix calls the Australian drama series Territory "your favorite primetime soap, but set in a region so rough and remote that nearly everything can kill you." Doesn't that sound like a show you need to watch right now?!
But we can't watch the show right now because there's still a bit of waiting to go before it makes its premiere this fall. Territory will be released on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 24, but the streamer has clued us in on a bit more information about the series. Wondering what it's about, who stars in it, and how many episodes there will be when it's released?
Here's everything you need to know about Territory before it hits our screens in October!
Synopsis
On paper, Territory sounds a bit like Yellowstone meets Dallas. Maybe Ozark meets 1980s Dynasty... but with horses. Even Walker, Texas Ranger meets Brothers & Sisters. Really, anything that mixes together themes of crime, family, scandal, power, and other tentpoles of the soap genre with those of the Western drama. But there's even more than meets the eye with Territory.
Here's the show's official synopsis via Netflix:
"When the world’s largest cattle station is left without a clear successor, generational clashes threaten to tear the Lawson family apart. Sensing this once great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions – rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners – move in for the kill."
The series began filming in September 2023 under the initial title Desert Kings. According to a Netflix press release, production took place in the Northern Territory "on the traditional land of the Larrakia people" including Darwin and the Top End. Other filming locations for the series also included parts of Adelaide, South Australia, the land of the Kaurna people, as well as UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park and Tipperary Station, according to Netflix. The streamer boasts that Territory is among the largest productions to ever be filmed in these rural Australian locations.
Cast
The leading star of Territory might be the most well-known in the cast. Australian actress Anna Torv is probably best known for her work in the popular and critically acclaimed television series Fringe, Netflix's Mindhunter, and HBO's The Last of Us. She's joined by a sprawling ensemble, which includes For All Mankind and One Piece vet Michael Dorman and Netflix favorite Sam Corlett, who starred in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Vikings: Valhalla.
Here's the full who's who of the drama series:
- Anna Torv as Emily Lawson
- Michael Dorman as Graham Lawson
- Robert Taylor as Colin Lawson
- Sam Corlett as Marshall Lawson
- Sara Wiseman as Sandra Kirby
- Dan Wyllie as Hank Hodge
- Clarence Ryan as Nolan Brannock
- Jay Ryan as Campbell Miller
- Philippa Northeast as Susie Lawson
- Joe Klocek as Lachie Kirby
- Kylah Day as Sharnie Kennedy
- Sam Delich as Rich Petrakis

- Tuuli Narkle as Keeley Redford
- Tyler Spencer as Dezi

The show was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies, directed by Greg McLean, and written by Timothy Lee, Kodie Bedford, Steven McGregor, and Michaeley O’Brien. Davies executive produces with Rob Gibson and Ian Collie. Upon the show's production start, Davies and Gibson said in a statement that they were excited "to do justice to the rarely-seen world, characters, and stories of the Top End." There's no doubt that they have done exactly that!
Episode count
The first season of Territory will contain six episodes, as Netflix calls the series a "six-part neo-Western drama." With an episode count that low, some might wonder if the show is either a miniseries or a limited series. So far, Netflix has not referred to the show as such in any writings, so there's no need to believe that its either a miniseries or a limited series.
We'll have to wait and see if the future could hold a second season for Territory. If the series becomes a success, Netflix could order another season and possibly increase the episode count or keep it the same. Also, the series might actually work as a limited series with only six episodes. Again, we'll have to watch the show when it premieres to find out!
As of this writing, Netflix has not released a teaser or trailer for the upcoming series. The streamer could drop a teaser in the next few months, though Netflix is known to release a full trailer about a month before the release date. Look out for previews of the show perhaps beginning in August but definitely in September. Stay tuned for more Territory news and updates from Netflix Life!
