Spaceman parents guide: Adam Sandler's latest movie is definitely for the adults

While it doesn't contain violence or nudity, Spaceman is a heavily philosophical drama that likely won't appeal to kids... or arachnophobes.

Adam Sandler's latest movie Spaceman is an emotional and meditative sci-fi drama film ideal for fans of Interstellar, Gravity, and Ad Astra, or any other movie where you watch someone struggle with the isolation of space travel.

Most of Sandler's Netflix movies are geared toward families, particularly his recent films Leo and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, but Spaceman is definitely a more mature entry into the comedian's filmography and probably not the best choice for a family movie night. The film is rated R, though it's not graphic or explicit at all, it deals with mature themes and its slow pacing might turn off young viewers.

Arachnophobes beware

Probably the biggest warning I can provide to prospective viewers of Spaceman is that it might be particularly unsettling for arachnophobes since one of the main characters is a giant talking spider.

And while Hanuš isn't evil or aggressive by any means, he's still a big spider that moves in an unnerving way throughout the space ship. Couple that with Max Richter's haunting score and some scenes do come off like a horror film.

Why did Spaceman receive an R rating?

The primary reason for Spaceman's R rating is due to language, there are some curse words used in the movie. But there isn't any sexual content or violence. That said, there are a few flashbacks to a pig slaughterhouse that might upset viewers.

Overall, the R rating comes from the fact Spaceman is a mature movie that deals with isolation and a man's crumbling marriage. It's probably not the best choice to pick if you're planning to watch it with kids around you as they'd definitely prefer some of Sandler's more lighthearted movies like the animated feature Leo.

Even adults might not like Spaceman as much as some of his other content because of its slow pacing. It's definitely not a comedy and Sandler's insular performance is more inline with his previous movie Punch Drunk Love than, say, Uncut Gems.
