Andrew Scott is Tom Ripley in the Netflix Original series Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith's popular crime novels, which have previously been adapted for the screen in movies like Purple Noon and the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley starring Matt Damon.
This latest version of the story hails from Academy Award-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian, who wrote and directed all eight episodes of the limited series. Get to know the cast of Ripley below.
Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley
Acclaimed Irish actor Andrew Scott stars as the titular character Tom Ripley, a sociopathic con man at the center of Patricia Highsmith's crime novels and multiple adaptations. A career criminal, Ripley takes pride in his ability to get away with crimes, though he's almost always living in a state of paranoia, wondering if today is the day they will finally catch up to him.
Scott had a great year in 2023 after starring in the buzzy film All of Us Strangers, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He's also well-known for his work on the hit series Fleabag and His Dark Materials, in addition to films like Spectre, 1917, and Pride. Next he'll star in the Netflix action comedy film Back in Action alongside Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx.
Johnny Flynn as Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf
Tom Ripley is hired by Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf's father to track Dickie down during his Italian sojourn and convince him to return to New York. Dickie has been enjoying his time with Marge Sherwood and has no intentions of returning to New York, though he does take an interest in Tom and the two forge an unlikely friendship. But it doesn't take long for Dickie to begin becoming suspicious of Tom, especially as Tom's obsession with him grows.
British actor Johnny Flynn is no stranger to Netflix projects, having appeared in several Netflix Originals already, such as Scrooge, Lovesick, The Dig, and Operation Mincemeat. A singer-songwriter, Flynn previously played David Bowie in the 2020 movie Stardust and starred opposite Anthony Hopkins in the 2023 film One Life. He's also the lead singer and writer of the band Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit.
Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood
Marge Sherwood is a stunning young woman who is attentive to her friend Dickie Greenleaf and uneasy around his new pal Tom Ripley. In the Netflix series, Marge is played by the popular actress Dakota Fanning, who has been acting in Hollywood alongside her sister Elle Fanning since they were both children.
One of Fanning's first roles was in the 2001 movie I Am Sam, a part that earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, a historic feat at her age. From there she went on to star in films like Uptown Girls, War of the Worlds, Charlotte's Web, and Coraline. In more recent years, she's been in projects like The Alienist, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Equalizer 3, The First Lady, and Viena and the Fantomes. She stars in The Watchers, a supernatural horror film set to premiere this June.
In addition to Ripley, Marge, and Dickie, the series also stars Eliot Sumner as Dickie's friend Freddie Miles and Maurizio Lombardi as Inspector Pietro Ravini.
Ripley begins streaming on Thursday, April 4, on Netflix.
