Remarkably Bright Creatures film adaptation starring Sally Field in the works at Netflix
Who doesn't love a good book-to-movie adaptation? We do, and it looks like Netflix does as well. The streamer just recently announced a new film adaptation of the wholesome mystery novel Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, and we've got all the juicy deets!
2x Academy Award-winning actress Sally Field is reportedly in talks to star in the Netflix feature adapted from the popular octopus book. She's a well-known actress whose most recent project was the sports comedy film 80 for Brady, which also starred fellow seasoned actresses Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Rita Moreno.
American film director and screenwriter Olivia Newman is signed on to direct the adaptation from a screenplay she's co-writing with John Whittington. Newman is best known for writing the script for and directing the Netflix drama film First Match as well as helming the mystery drama movie Where the Crawdads Sing. Whittington, on the other hand, is known for co-writing the script for the action-adventure comedy film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and its upcoming sequel.
David Levine will be producing the adaptation through Anonymous Content, along with Bryan Unkeless (The Watcher, Mike) and Peter Craig (Top Gun: Maverick, The Mother, The Batman). Craig is also Field's oldest son. Executive producers include Tony Lipp of Anonymous Content and Alyssa Rodrigues.
Serving as Van Pelt's debut novel, the New York Times bestseller centers around the unlikely connection formed between a grieving widow working as a custodian at an aquarium and the giant Pacific octopus that lives there.
Tova Sullivan is grieving the death of her husband and is still trying to cope with the disappearance of her son 30 years ago. While working the night shift at an aquarium, she becomes acquainted with the bad-tempered octopus Marcellus. After the two eventually form a unique friendship, Marcellus then works to uncover the truth behind Tova's son's disappearance.
Although Field's potential role has not been disclosed, it looks like if everything works itself out, she will be starring in the leading role of Tova Sullivan. However, the character's name may be changed for the adaptation.
Sadly, this is all that's been revealed about the Remarkably Bright Creatures film adaptation. Of course, we'll come back and share everything as new information comes out. But for now, you'll just have to stay tuned to Netflix Life!
