Rebel Moon: Part One, Maestro, and more Netflix titles to watch this weekend, Dec. 22
By Mads Lennon
The biggest Netflix releases of the month are here with the premiere of Zack Snyder's space opera Rebel Moon and the Golden Globe-nominated movie Maestro starring Bradley Cooper as the 20th century musical icon and famed composer Leonard Bernstein.
With just a few days left until Christmas, Netflix subscribers have a lot of options to choose from to keep busy over the weekend while decorating and prepping for the holidays. Whether you're in the mood for an old favorite, a sci-fi epic, or even a hilarious comedy special, there's something for everyone! Here's our picks for what to watch on Netflix this weekend.
Maestro
Awards season watchers will want to ensure Maestro is at the top of their watchlists this weekend as the Leonard Bernstein biopic is a favorite to get several nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards. Some critics have even predicted that star, co-writer, and director Bradley Cooper could finally win his first Oscar after being nominated nine times previously. Maestro is described as an epic tale of family and love following the classical composer Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
Gyeongseong Creature season 1 part 1
The first part of the new Korean series Gyeongseong Creature is now streaming on Netflix with part 2 slated for a Jan. 5 release. Blending historical drama with suspense, Gyeongseong Creature is set in 1945 and showcases a battle against a terrifying creature born out of human greed. The series stars Park Seo-jun, Han So-hee, and more. Characters must go on a dangerous mission into a mysterious hospital where they will come face-to-face with the forces behind the menace.
Trevor Noah: Where Was I
Trevor Noah's latest comedy special was added to Netflix earlier this week, so if you haven't gotten the chance to watch it yet then this weekend is the perfect time to sit back, relax, and enjoy some laughs! The comedian riffs on national anthems, getting roasted in Paris, and more about his recent travels. Filmed at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire
Considered to be director Zack Snyder's own version of Star Wars, Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire is just the first half of a massive sci-fi event. The second part of the first film, Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver, will be released in Apr. 2024. Fans of the director will want to tune in for this movie since it's one of Netflix's biggest and most expensive releases this December.
The story centers on a mysterious woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella) tasked with putting together a group of insurgents and warriors to fight back against an oppressive ruling force threatening a peaceful colony located on the edge of the galaxy. Critics haven't been kind to this movie, but it's probably worth watching to form your own opinion.
White Christmas
Considering it's the weekend before Christmas, now seems like the perfect time to revisit a holiday classic. This 1954 film will be leaving Netflix on Dec. 31 so make sure to watch before it's gone. Bing Crosby stars as Bob Wallace in this joyful musical about a group of singers doing whatever they can to pull off a Christmas miracle and help their former WWII commander save his country inn.
