Read and watch all the Avatar: The Last Airbender shows, movies, comics, and novels

One of the most highly anticipated new Netflix originals coming in 2024 is Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's scheduled to be released on Feb. 22, 2024, and we're all patiently waiting for it to come out.

It's a live-action series adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon animated television series of the same name by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Albert Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Additionally, the ensemble cast is made up of Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Daniel Dae Kim, and many others.

The Netflix show follows the journey of Aang, a young Air Nomad and the last survivor of his nation, as he reawakens to fulfill his destiny as the next Avatar. As the new Avatar, Aang is faced with the responsibility of mastering the four classical elements (water, earth, fire, air), maintaining peace among the world's four nations, and saving the world from the ruthless Fire Nation.

We can't wait to see if the live-action series will do justice to the animated series. But in the meantime, let's prepare ourselves for the upcoming release by watching/re-watching the animated shows, watching the live-action movie, reading the books and comics, and playing the video games.

What to know about the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise

There's only one film in the franchise so far. It's the 2010 live-action film The Last Airbender that didn't do as well as everyone expected. It can be streamed on Hulu or Paramount+ with a subscription. An untitled animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is currently in the works and is expected to hit theaters on Oct. 10, 2025 by Paramount Pictures. Also, there are two additional theatrical animated Avatar: The Last Airbender films in the works at Avatar Studios.
