On Sept. 1, Netflix shared some good news with its subscriber base. It announced that the first season of the popular Showtime horror-thriller series Yellowjackets would be coming to the streaming platform in October. We definitely didn't see this coming, but we couldn't be more excited. Yellowjackets season 1 is slated to land on Netflix on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024.

Recently, we've seen the release of several Showtime series on Netflix. For example, the streamer added the anthology drama series Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, the drama miniseries Patrick Melrose and the legal drama series Your Honor to its platform in May 2024. Then, in June, we saw the addition of all eight seasons of the hit crime drama series Dexter on Netflix. So, it's not totally surprising that the streaming giant decided to acquire the streaming rights to yet another Showtime series.

Yellowjackets is hands down one of Showtime's best TV shows. It was created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, who are best known for previously writing for the supernatural drama series The Originals. The first season premiered on Showtime on Nov. 14, 2021, and was an instant hit. Critics and viewers alike enjoyed the series, with many praising it for its compelling storyline and the outstanding performances from the cast.

The show has even gone on to be nominated for 10 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, and nods for cast members Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci. Due to a successful first season, Showtime went ahead and renewed the horror-thriller series for a second season in December 2021. The second season aired from March 2023 to May 2023. Then, in December 2022, Yellowjackets was renewed for a third season, which is set to premiere on Showtime sometime in 2025. Sadly, only the first season will be coming to Netflix this October.

The horror-thriller series takes place in two timelines: 1996 and 2021. In the 1996 timeline, we follow a high school girls' soccer team who, while on a flight to Seattle for a national tournament, gets involved in a plane crash that leaves them stranded in the deep wilderness for 19 months. Then, in the 2021 timeline, we follow the survivors' lives in the present day, where they're no longer in the wilderness but still struggle with the trauma they experienced.

The well-ensemble cast is made up of Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Kevin Alves, Simone Kessell, Lauren Ambrose, and so many more talented actors.
