Nobody Wants This parents guide: An edgy rom-com series that's not NSFW
By Reed Gaudens
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody star in Netflix's romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This, which made its debut on Sept. 26. A sex and relationships podcaster falls for a rabbi, and it's the culture shock of a lifetime as their very different world attempt to push them apart. Will they or won't they make their relationship work? That's the question the series asks!
But before checking out Nobody Wants This on Netflix, prospective viewers are probably wondering about the show's age rating and what potentially graphic content might surprise them. Well, here's the good news: Besides the picture below, there's no graphic content featured in the series. It's a feel-good romantic comedy reminiscent of the genre's glory days.
For more information about what to expect from the show, below we're sharing a spoiler-free explanation of the language, sexual situations, and more!
Nobody Wants This is rated TV-MA
According to the official Nobody Wants This page on Netflix, the series has been given an age rating of TV-MA, which means it's only appropriate for mature audiences. The rating's only listed category is language, though the series also features a few instances of sexuality, smoking, and other situations worth warning potential viewers about before tuning in.
Sex and nudity
The series does not feature any nudity and there also aren't any explicit sex scenes. There are scenes with characters in bed that suggest that have just had sex, but nothing is shown. Because Kristen Bell's character hosts a podcast about sex and relationships, there are sporadic conversations about sex with innuendos and other suggestive mentions of topics like orgasms. An extended scene takes place in a sex shop and there are many phallic sex toys visible in the background.
Language and violence
Nobody Wants This doesn't contain any violence at all, but the language in the series is a bit heightened. There are many instances of profanity throughout all 10 episodes, including varied uses of the word "f-ck." However, if you have watched an R-rated romantic comedy movie, the series' language is probably much more tame. Still, if you don't appreciate profanity, be warned that you will be hearing some all throughout the series!
Drugs and smoking
In certain episodes of the season, drugs and smoking make appearances. During a dinner party scene, characters are seen smoking. Another scene finds a character taking an edible, while varied sequences reference other recreational drug use including mushrooms and ayahuasca. None of the instances of drugs or smoking play a large role in the story and doesn't pull focus. Throughout the series, the characters also drink alcohol.
Overall, Nobody Wants This has a perfectly balanced TV-MA rating, and it's the kind of rom-com you don't have to worry about watching around other people and feeling awkward. It's an adult show without being an adult show. There's just enough edge to make it feel like an accurate portrayal of 40-somethings falling in love without completely sanitizing the dialogue and stories to be accessible to everyone. You can watch freely without concern for something jarringly unexpected.
