4 Netflix shows that definitely won't be back in 2024

Stranger Things, Wednesday, and are just a few of the Netflix shows we know won't return in 2024.

Netflix has a great lineup of new and returning shows coming in 2024, but there more than a few popular Netflix shows that won't be back for new seasons in 2024, including some of the streaming network's most popular original series.

We all know that 2023 was a tough year for the entertainment industry with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the writers' and actors' unions going on strike for the better part of the year. In 2024, consumers and subscribers will feel the pain of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers not making a deal with the writers' and actors' unions much earlier. By allowing the strikes to last as long as they did, the AMPTP allowed the TV and film pipeline to run dry. Now, it's a mad dash to get shows and movies filming to hit 2024 release dates. What that means, for the second year in a row in many cases, fans will be without their favorite shows and movies.

So, that's basically the lay of the land heading into 2024. There are more great shows and movies on the way, but this year is definitely going to be an interesting one for Netflix in particular. Let's get the list of Netflix shows that won't be back in 2024 started with one of the most popular Netflix shows of all time, Wednesday.

Wednesday season 2

Aside from Squid Game, Wednesday is the most popular Netflix original series of all time, and it's a bummer that we're going to go another year without one of the most fun Netflix shows. Jenna Ortega stars as Wednesday Addams in the dark comedy-mystery series.

Production on the first season took place in Romania, but the series is moving to Ireland for season 2, according to a report from Deadline. It's also been reported that filming will start sometime in the spring. Unfortunately, that means Wednesday season 2 is not coming to Netflix in 2024. There's simply too much work with production, editing, and post-production, and promotion to expect Netflix to release Wednesday season 2 next year.

We don't know exactly where the story is going to go in season 2. The mystery, for the most part, was wrapped up in the first season, but I know we can't wait to see what Ortega, Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, and the rest of this great cast.

It's obviously a bummer we won't see Wednesday season 2 in 2024, but we know the second season will be well worth the wait.

The Witcher season 4

The Witcher season 3 was the show's best season, and it was released on Netflix during the summer of 2023. We have a feeling that we're going to be waiting quite a long time until The Witcher season 4. It was reported that production was going to start on season 4 in the fall of 2023, but it was delayed until 2024. So far, we're still waiting for the official start date to be reported, but it's expected to begin sometime in early 2024. Even with an early 2024 start date, a 2024 release is definitely out of the question.

Henry Cavill, who starred as Geralt of Rivia for the first three seasons, left the series following season 3. Liam Hemsworth will take over the role for the fourth season and beyond.

It'll be really interesting to see where the show goes from here. At the end of season 3, Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt are in separate places again. Will they find a way back to each other? I have a feeling, but there's a lot of space and time between them.

One Piece season 2

One Piece premiered on Netflix on Aug. 31, 2023, and it's easily one of the best Netflix shows of 2023. The series is based on Eiichiro Oda's manga of the name and the anime adaptation. One Piece season 2 is already in the works, but unfortunately, there's just no way we're going to see the new season in 2024. We're going to be waiting until 2025 to see what's next with Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates.

Of all the Netflix shows, One Piece is one of the most ambitious and expansive in terms of story, set design, action sequences and stunts, and effects. It takes a long time to film a season of this show, so we're expecting quite a big gap between seasons of One Piece. As of right now, there's no reported start date for One Piece season 2 production. We'll keep you posted on that. For now, we're expecting One Piece season 2 to film for most of 2024 and be released on Netflix, hopefully, in early 2025.

I also could see Netflix filming seasons of One Piece back-to-back, as they've done with other shows on occasion. That's a massive undertaking, but it could cut down the gap between seasons. One Piece season 3 has not been ordered, but I could see it being ordered soon.

You have a long time, but One Piece is a must-watch on Netflix. We highly recommend you catch up before One Piece season 2 hits Netflix. Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Gibson, and Taz Skylar are all great! Netflix also just ordered an original One Piece anime series, too!

Stranger Things season 5

Wednesday might be the more popular show by viewer metrics on Netflix, but there's one Netflix show that fans are going to miss the most in 2024, and that's Stranger Things. We have been hoping for a long time that Stranger Things season 5, the final season of the series, would be released in the summer of 2024, or possibly even the fall or winter 2024. For a while, it even looked like that was going to happen, but the AMPTP's failure to make a deal with the writers' and actors' unions ruined that plan.

Production on Stranger Things season 5 was slated to begin in May and then with things really ramping up in June. When the writers' and actors' went on strike, production on season 5 was delayed. According to the reports, the production on season 5 officially begins the first week or so of January 2024. It's also been confirmed that the cast and crew are in Atlanta for the episode table reads.

Even though production is starting soon, there's just no way we'll see season 5 on Netflix in 2025. The season is going to film "for a year," according to David Harbour, and then there's going to be a lengthy editing and post-production period before promo starts. With season 4, the Duffers and the post-production team were literally editing up the release on Netflix. It's going to be a while until season 5 is released.

The good news is this sounds like this season could be one of the show's best. It's going to wrap up the story that started in season 1 with Eleven's lab escape and Will's disappearance. I can't wait to see how it ends. Oh, and it sounds like more Stranger Things spinoffs are coming, too.
