Netflix documentary to explore the controversy behind the Montreal Expos departing Canada for Washington
By Mads Lennon
Netflix is continuing to flesh out its sports slate by greenlighting a new documentary about Canada's beloved baseball team the Montreal Expos, the first Major League Baseball franchise situated outside of the United States.
That's why it became so significant when the Expos were later relocated to Washington D.C. and officially rebranded as the Washington Nationals in 2005 after over 30 years in Montreal, though the beginning of the end really started with several setbacks that began in the 1990s. The eventual departure of the Expos to the U.S. sparked a debate that is still heavily discussed decades later.
The upcoming documentary, which is currently untitled, marks the streamer's first collaboration with Montreal-based Attraction Distribution.
"It is with great pride and enthusiasm that Attraction announces the first project to result from our partnership with Netflix. The Expos were the first MLB team outside of the US, and despite their departure from Montreal, they continue to have passionate fans to this day. This film will tell the story of the team through the eyes of those who lived it."
- Richard Speer, President of Attraction
Per Variety, some of the "setbacks" that ultimately led to the Expos leaving Canada were the firing of beloved manager Felipe Alou, fee disputes between the Expos owner Jeffrey Loria and the city, and more.
Sports fans have their share of content at Netflix these days with a plethora of different documentaries out right now (or in development), including Formula 1: Drive to Survive, NASCAR: Full Speed, Full Swing, Untold, Quarterback, Under Pressure, and more. The golf docuseries Full Swing returns with its second season later this year and Netflix is also developing another season of Quarterback.
The upcoming Expos doc is also just one of the baseball series in the works, as Netflix is working alongside MLB Studios to follow the Red Sox during their upcoming season from start to finish for a docuseries that will be released in 2025.
It's great news for baseball fans as the sport has been kind of shuffled to the side in recent years, with more focus put on acquiring football-centric docs and content. So between the Expos and Red Sox documentaries, hopefully baseball lovers will see a surge centered around America's pastime.
