Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts to co-produce Netflix series Calabasas
We all know Kim Kardashian for the glitz and glam that is her very extravagant life, but in recent years, the media personality and socialite has broadened her horizons and made space for herself in the film and TV world. She's currently starring in the horror anthology series American Horror Story: Delicate alongside Emma Roberts, and now we've learned that she and Emma will be collaborating again on a new project. That project is a television series titled Calabasas.
If you're a fan of Kim and/or have watched her reality shows Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Kardashians, you're probably thinking to yourself, is this going to be another reality series? No, it isn't. While the show is named after the California city that Kim and her family pretty much put on the map with their reality series, it is not an unscripted series focusing on real people and their real-life experiences. Instead, it's a scripted TV show that Kim is confirmed to be executive producing along with Emma, Pretty Little Liars creator I. Marlene King, and film and television producer Alexandra Milchan.
In a competitive bidding war between major buyers, Netflix came out as the winner and acquired Calabasas. Now, the show is currently in development. It's based on the 2021 book If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now by Via Bleidner and centers around a 16-year-old sheltered girl named Via whose life is completely changed when she's forced to transfer to Calabasas High from a private Catholic school. She soon finds herself in unfamiliar territory that she must quickly learn to adapt to.
In addition to being an executive producer on the show, Marlene will write the scripts and serve as showrunner. At the moment, who will direct the episodes is unknown, and it's also unknown how many episodes the show will consist of. We'll share these details once they're revealed.
According to Deadline, Calabasas began to come together after Marlene pitched the show to Alexandra and signed on as writer and showrunner. Kim later joined the project after her talent agency, WME, hooked up her with Marlene. Marlene is also repped by WME. Emma signed on soon after. Once they were all partnered up, they quickly got the ball rolling on the project by taking meetings. Then, offers started coming in with Netflix ultimately putting in the winning bid and acquiring the series.
That's all there is to know about Calabasas as of right now. As more details are revealed about the upcoming Netflix series, we'll be sure to come back and share everything we find out. So, stay tuned to Netflix Life!
