Kate Hudson teams up with Mindy Kaling for Netflix basketball comedy, and it's a slam dunk

After a memorable turn in the ensemble cast of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Kate Hudson's coming back to Netflix, and this time, she's working with none other than Mindy Kaling. The Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress will both headline and executive produce the upcoming sports comedy, that's still untitled at the time of her casting. How exciting!

The series has been described as a professional basketball front office comedy, lending to the idea that it will be partly a workplace comedy. We all know Kaling's excellent at crafting a hilarious workplace comedy given her beginnings on The Office and her eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project. There's no doubt Kate Hudson will soar with Kaling-penned jokes.

While the series doesn't yet have a name, Hudson's character does. She'll play Isla Gordon, who's described by Netflix in a press release as the "only sister in a family of competitive brothers" and someone who has been "overlooked and underappreciated" for much of her life. However, when she lands the unexpected gig as the President of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team, it's time for Isla to prove herself to her family and the world.

Here's the official synopsis for the series from Netflix:

"When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports."

Prior to Hudson's high-profile casting as the show's lead on Jan. 26, Kaling had previously shared a casting call on her social media accounts — not for Hudson's character, but for another character in the series. According to the casting call, the creative team is searching for a Hispanic/Latino actor who can play 18 years old. Kaling noted that the team was taking the open casting call route because that's how she previously discovered Maitreyi Ramakrishnan for Never Have I Ever.

Following the announcement of Hudson's involvement as the series' lead, more casting announcements will likely trickle out soon. The series was previously ordered straight to series back in June 2021, and Netflix confirms that the first season will contain 10 episodes. Kaling's collaboration mainstays Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen are both on board as writers and executive producers, along with Howard Klein, Jeanie Buss, and Linda Rambis. Stassen will be the showrunner for the series.

As How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days fans will remember, Hudson played a diehard New York Knicks fan in the fan-favorite romantic comedy, so it's rather fitting and ironic that she will now be playing the president of a basketball team. Not only the president of a basketball team, but a basketball team in Los Angeles. Kate Hudson will be perfect for this role, and we can't wait to see who will join the cast as her brothers and her team. No matter what, this untitled comedy is already one heck of a slam dunk.
