Joey King and Chase Stokes take on the future in Uglies: Here's what time to watch

This September, we're getting a pre-spooky season Friday the 13th, and while these Fridays tend to be big ones for horror movie fans, Netflix won't be releasing a new horror movie. Instead, usually spook-ified occasion debuts Joey King's latest collaboration with Netflix, the dystopian young adult sci-fi flick Uglies. It's King's second Netflix movie of 2024, following the hit rom-com A Family Affair.

Based on the novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies makes its long-awaited premiere on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 13 as the big movie release of the week. Jumping off of the success of last week's hit Netflix original movie Rebel Ridge, King's latest starring role has all of the potential to be another blockbuster and another sci-fi win for Netflix this year following Atlas.

As mentioned aboved, Uglies will be released on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 13 at midnight PT, which means the movie will drop on the East Coast of the United States at 3 a.m. Since it's not a long weekend or a holiday, most people likely won't be staying up to watch the movie as soon as it releases on Friday the 13th, but it's the perfect weekend watch with the family!

Synopsis, cast, and trailer

Scott Westerfeld's book of the same name was first published in 2005, and many of us millennials likely read the book back in our tween years. For those who haven't read the book and are unfamiliar with the story, Uglies takes plays in a dystopian future where 16 year olds are forced to undergo a cosmetic procedure to become "pretties."

But when Tally's best friend runs away before she's to receive her surgery and effectively fights back against the system, Tally must venture to find her friend. Like most dystopian sci-fi movies, you can expect a group of young radicals to push back and help change the world for the better. Here's a closer look at the official synopsis via Netflix:

"In a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16, Tally is eager for her turn to join the rest of society. But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted."

The official trailer released by Netflix gives viewers a first glimpse into this world of Uglies and Pretties and introduces us to Tally, who has always dreamed of being Pretty. In addition to introducing King as Tally Youngblood, the trailer also gives a first look at Outer Banks star Chase Stokes as Peris and The Perfect Find star Keith Powers as David.
