In the Virgin River season 5 finale, we learned how Mel met her birth father, and in Virgin River season 6, we're going to learn how Mel's mother met her father.

Jumping off of Mel's major paternity discovery last season, the upcoming new episodes will find the bride-to-be getting to know her birth father, Everett (John Allen Nelson), and part of that will be learning his history.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that a Virgin River prequel series had been placed in development, and the series would center on Mel's mother, Sarah, and Everett.

On Sept. 23, Deadline announced the official castings for Sarah and Everett's prequel counterparts. Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr will make their debuts as Mel's parents in a 1970s flashback in Virgin River season 6.

Along with the casting announcement, Deadline revealed first-look photos of Rothe and Kerr in their recurring roles as the streaming service continues to ponder expanding the Virgin River universe.

The pair will appear in the new season in scenes taking place in the early 1970s, the first blast to the past for the hit Netflix romantic drama. It's such an exciting twist for fans to look forward to!

Meet Mel's parents in the '70s in Virgin River season 6

According to Deadline, Rothe brings Mel's mother Sarah to life for the first time on the series as a free spirited activist hoping to avoid the tradition path for young women at that time. Of course, we know Sarah ultimately became a mother to Mel and her sister. Back in the '70s, Sarah formed an attraction to a handsome musician who "might just be her star-crossed soulmate."

That handsome musician? Mel's birth father, Everett! Although we didn't learn much about him in season 5, no one probably would have guessed that he was an aspiring singer-songwriter hoping to make it big in the music scene. In the '70s, he's on the road in the VW van when he happens upon a "beautiful hitchhiker." Bet you only need one guess... It's Sarah!

While Netflix hasn't yet revealed the season 6 release date as of the announcement of Rothe and Kerr's castings, the streamer has clued fans in on what to expect from the new episodes.

Apart from getting to know where Mel came from, the season will also finally give fans what they have been waiting for: Mel and Jack's wedding! Leading up to her big day, Mel's clearly looking back at the past for answers to her present and future as a wife and hopeful mother.

Check out the official season 6 synopsis via Netflix:

"Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth installment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles, delightful wedding drama, as well as uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s."

Scottish actor and musician Callum Kerr was previously seen in such television series as Hollyoaks and Monarch. He'll also appear again on Netflix in One Piece season 2 as Smoker.

Jessica Rothe's perhaps best known for her role in the horror comedy movie Happy Death Day and its sequel as well as the movies Forever My Girl, Valley Girl, All My Life, and Boy Kills World.
