There's some bittersweet updates out of the Heartstopper universe about the future of the beloved Netflix original teen romantic dramedy. In a new profile of series star Joe Locke in Variety, creator Alice Oseman has revealed when the series will end. Thankfully, it's not intended to end with Heartstopper season 3, which premieres on Oct. 3.
Oseman shared that in the event Netflix renews Heartstopper for another season after season 3, the series would then come to an end. All being told, Heartstopper season 4 would be the final season. Nick and Charlie's love story, and those of their tight-knit group of friends, could soon approach its natural conclusion with just one last batch of episodes.
As of this writing on Aug. 27, Netflix has not either renewed or canceled Heartstopper beyond season 3, though given the show's loyal fanbase and popular source material, it's rather likely that the streamer will opt to order a fourth season. After the first season took the world by storm, Netflix gave the series a rare two-season renewal, which sees the show through seasons 2 and 3.
Heartstopper could end with possible season 4
Because it's such a personal story, to fans around the world and to its creator, it's only right to allow Oseman to decide when it's the right time to end their story. If they think four seasons is plenty to wrap up Nick and Charlie's journey as told in Oseman's series of best-selling graphic novels, then that's when Heartstopper should end.
Oseman recently released the fifth volume of their graphic novel series in December 2023, with the sixth and final book set to be released in the near future. In May 2024, the author gave fans an update that the writing process had been completed and they were still in the process of drawing. The sixth book will contain the eighth chapter and an epilogue to wrap everything up.
In a Patreon post, Oseman opened about about a potential fourth season and a desire to be able give the Netflix series a proper ending instead of ending abruptly and doing a disservice to fans and the story. The author and showrunner also mentioned that Heartstopper season 4 would ideally cover Volume 6 and the Nick and Charlie novella, which means the last book would definitely be released before a potential fourth and final season drops on Netflix.
But have no fear, Oseman has already laid out a plan with their followers that consists of them drawing Volume 6 while also beginning to write scripts for season 4 before even getting an official renewal from Netflix, ensuring they get a jump on the writing process and have plenty of time to create without having to rush. It's all perfectly setting up Netflix to give Oseman the official green light.
Personally, it's an educated guess that Netflix will most definitely pick up Heartstopper season 4 sometime after season 3 premieres. The streamer has no reason not to at this point. Why cancel a show that so many people adore when the creator has said all they need is one more season to land the plane? Netflix seems to really love Heartstopper, too, so season 4 is a no-brainer.
