Dan Levy is best known for his award-winning performance as David Rose in the acclaimed and beloved Canadian comedy Schitt's Creek, but now he's ready to really branch out into new ventures. Good Grief marks his directorial debut and Levy also wrote the script in addition to starring in the movie that allows him a vehicle to show off his dramatic acting chops.

Alongside Levy, Good Grief stars Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel and the trio make for an excellent group of friends. The movie centers on Levy's character Marc as he grieves his husband, played by Luke Evans, after his sudden death.

A poignant and understated tale, Good Grief features a lot of fantastic music to complement composer Rob Simonsen's (The Whale, Ghostbusters: Afterlife) original score. Levy discussed the importance of music to this project, especially because he didn't necessarily want the film to feel intrinsic to any specific time, which makes sense when you think of the film's overarching theme of grief and how personal of a journey it is for us all. There's no real time limit on the grieving process, so the film's usage of music is very analogous in that way.

"I wanted this movie to live in a very nostalgic place. I didn't really want it to be tied to any specific time period. There was a concerted effort to never lean too heavily into the present. I remember talking to Rob about it because the music is really all over the place. They have a theme of emotionality to all of them, but from very different time periods and with different meanings. That to me is the grieving process. There will always be times where you want something uplifting, something that recalls nostalgia, something that takes your mind off it, something that plays into the emotionality of everything."

In addition to working closely with Simonsen, they also collaborated with the film's music supervisor Season Kent to ensure the score and chosen songs would create an overall cohesion and a sense of "cozy nostalgia."
