It looks like we finally have a streaming release date for the upcoming fantasy romance movie Girl Haunts Boy. It will reportedly be released on Netflix this October. The exact date is Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, so make sure to save the date!
We first learned of this movie back in May 2022. However, it wasn't titled Girl Haunts Boy back then, nor was it billed as a movie. In fact, Netflix wasn't involved with the project in any way. Max, which was called HBO Max at the time, had greenlit the project, which was originally titled B-Loved. And instead of it being a movie, it was going to be a two-part television special event premiering on Max in time for Valentine’s Day 2023.
It's unclear what happened, but the special didn't end up being released on Max in February 2023. It didn't even come out this February. Now, we've just learned that Netflix has acquired the streaming rights and will be releasing it as a movie on its platform this October. Maybe that's what the hold-up was.
Girl Haunts Boy was directed by Emily Ting (Tall Girl 2) from a screenplay written by Black List Nicholl Fellowship winner Cesar Vitale. It centers around the special friendship formed between a grieving teen boy and the spirit of a girl from the 1920s who haunts the teen boy's new home.
On Sept. 13, Ting shared her excitement about Girl Haunts Boy's upcoming release on Netflix via a post on Facebook. Here's what the caption to the post says:
"Two years ago, I was hired by HBO Max to direct a 2 part TV special called “B-Loved” slated for release on Valentine’s Day 2023. Two years later, it is now a movie called “Girl Haunts Boy,” and it’s premiering on Netflix on Oct. 10th!! It’s been an emotional roller coaster for the last two years to say the least, but thanks to the unwavering tenacity of our producer Mark Burton and studio Fifth Season, this absolute gem of a film has found the best home possible. This was one of the best professional experiences of my life, and I can’t wait to finally share the film with you on Oct. 10th! (You’re going to want to watch this one with a box of tissues!)"Emily Ting
Michael Cimino, who is best known for starring as the title character in Love, Victor, stars in the leading role of Cole, a teen boy grieving the loss of his father. Cobra Kai star Peyton List plays the role of Bea, a free-spirited teenage ghost who has inhabited Cole's house for centuries. Also joining them in the cast are Andrea Navedo (Jane the Virgin), Brandon Michael Hall (God Friended Me, Search Party), Ethan Herschenfeld (Red Notice), Shivani Mendez (The Big Leap), and Phoebe Holden.
Unfortunately, an official trailer has not been released yet. However, we're expecting Netflix to drop the trailer by the end of September. Once the trailer has been released, we'll come back and share it. But for now, this is all that we know about Girl Haunts Boy.
