Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lee Daniels is best known for helming movies such as Precious, The Paperboy, The Butler and The United States vs. Billie Holiday. He's also known for co-creating the TV shows Empire and Star. Now, he's decided to try his hand at making a film of the horror genre. It's called The Deliverance, and it's slated to be released on Netflix on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024. It will also receive a limited theatrical release on Aug. 16, 2024.

We first learned of The Deliverance back in January 2022 when it was announced that Netflix paid a hefty $65 million for the rights to the movie in a competitive bidding war. Daniels was revealed to be directing the supernatural horror film from a screenplay he co-wrote with David Coggeshall, Elijah Bynum, and Thomas Westfall.

Later, it was reported that Tucker Tooley would be producing the film through Tooley Entertainment, Daniels and Pam Williams through Lee Daniels Entertainment, and Jackson Nguyen and Todd Crites through Turn Left Productions. Executive producers include Greg Renker, Hilary Shor, Gregoire Gensollen, and Jackie Shenoo.

Inspired by a true story, The Deliverance centers around a single mother who, after moving into her new home with her family, finds herself fighting for her life and her kids when she discovers that a malevolent entity is haunting the house.

Here's the official logline via Netflix:

"Inspired by a terrifying true story, a mother fights for her life, her faith, and the souls of her children after discovering their new home is haunted by a demonic presence."

Golden Globe Award-winning actress Andra Day stars in the leading role of the struggling single mother Ebony Jackson. She's best known for previously starring in the biographical drama film The United States vs. Billie Holiday as the title character, a movie that she worked on with Daniels.

Joining her in The Deliverance cast are other well-known actors such as Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

If you're looking forward to seeing this exorcism horror movie, then you absolutely must check out the gripping official trailer as well!

The Deliverance is rated R, meaning it may be inappropriate for ages under 17. It was given this maturity rating for violent content, strong language, and some sexual references. Since it's a horror film, it's not really surprising that it's rated R. Most horror flicks are given this rating.

We definitely do not recommend watching this movie with young kids around. Wait until they're asleep or when they're occupied with a kids' movie or show. I doubt you'd want to be disturbed once you start this film.

Now that you know all there is to know about The Deliverance, all there is left to do is wait until its release. It's set to drop on Netflix on Aug. 30 at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET/2:00 a.m. CT. Make sure to save the date and set your alarm!
