Emma Stone's funniest movie yet is back on Netflix in July 2024
By Reed Gaudens
Two-time Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone will be back on Netflix this summer, but not with a new movie. One of the star's classic roles makes its return to Netflix on July 1, and it's an immediate contender for a summer movie night. That's right, Easy A makes its comeback to the streamer in celebration of the movie's 14th anniversary.
The 2010 teen comedy comes from director Will Gluck, who most recently directed the blockbuster romantic comedy Anyone But You starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The romantic comedy became a huge hit on Netflix, paving the way for the director's breakout '10s hit to return for a victory lap. Not to mention, Stone's still the reigning Best Actress winner. That's cause for celebration!
Easy A stars Stone as teen Olive Penderghast, who enjoys a mostly calm existence in the background of her high school's social structure. However, when she tells a lie that she lost her virginity to a college boy and the rumors spreads like wildfire, she leans into her new "bad girl" persona a la The Scarlet Letter. But living her lie prevents Olive from living authentically and finding real love.
If Mean Girls (2004) was the teen comedy of the 2000s, Easy A arrived in theaters six years later and took over that mantle for the 2010s. Stone's breakthrough starring performance, which she delivered when she was 21 years old, earned the movie star her first Golden Globe Award nomination. In reality, it should have been her first Academy Award nomination, but you can't win 'em all.
Easy A holds an 85% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which for a teen romantic comedy is basically a perfect score. The movie features an excellent and hilarious ensemble cast that also includes Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Thomas Haden Church, Patricia Clarkson, Cam Gigandet, Lisa Kudrow, Malcolm McDowell, Aly Michalka, and Stanely Tucci. A perfect cast is perfect.
If you're looking for even more Emma Stone on Netflix this summer, her 2009 comedy film Zombieland also drops on Netflix on July 1. Like Easy A, the movie also makes frequent reappearances on Netflix every now and again. Stone also stars in the Netflix original limited series Maniac, and her films La La Land and The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel are currently available to watch on Netflix.
