A new Dune movie is coming to Netflix soon (but not the one you're hoping for)

Dune: Part Two is newly streaming on Max, but Netflix is adding another movie in the franchise for those who haven't seen it.

It goes without saying that the Dune franchise is a complete phenomenon of the moment. The sequel to Denis Villeneuve's Dune premiered in March of this year and completely exceeded expectations, with fans rallying for not just the special effects and cinematography teams to win Academy Awards but also the cast and even the film itself in the Best Picture category. There are truly not enough good things to say about Dune: Part Two, and I hope it reaches an even larger audience now that it's streaming on Max.

Because Villeneuve's movies are produced by Warner Bros., it makes sense that they'd call Max their streaming home. Although Dune (2021) was available to stream on the platform for a limited time, it's since been removed. But Netflix is ready to have some fun in the Duniverse again, claiming a bit of Lisan al Gaib for themselves by adding not Dune (2021) or Dune: Part Two (2024) to its library, but taking it all the way back to the first film adaption, Dune (1894).

David Lynch's Dune comes to Netflix on June 1

Brand new Dune fans might not know it, but Oscar-nominated director David Lynch actually adapted the Frank Herbert epic years and years before Villeneuve. It stars Lynch's frequent collaborator Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica, and Jürgen Prochnow as Duke Leto Atreides, along with an ensemble cast. Funny enough, far before Austin Butler stepped into the role of Feyd-Rautha, Sting played the part! Other recognizable names who appeared in Dune include Patrick Stewart, Max von Sydow, and Brad Dourif.

Unfortunately, Dune (1984) received a negative response from critics, so much so that it's often looked at as a joke and a demerit on Lynch's filmography. The experimental director, best known for surreal films like Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, and Blue Velvet, has publicly spoken out against his Dune on multiple occasions, recalling his rough working relationship with Universal Pictures and how difficult production was. Not having control over the final cut, Lynch felt that he was "selling out" with the movie, and it seems he still very much so has a bad taste in his mouth over it.

That said, in the years since Lynch's Dune came out, it's amassed a cult following, with many finding charm in the mess and others enjoying it ironically. Now that Villeneuve's Dune movies are out, the 1984 adaption has seen a bit of a resurgence in popularity as new Dune fans check out the original.

Curious to find out just how bad — or just how good! — Lynch's Dune is? (Trust me, it's really not terrible.) If you're a fan of the books or the new movies, it's worth the watch. You can start watching the movie on Netflix starting June 1.
