Dead Boy Detectives and 3 other new releases to watch on Netflix this weekend (plus 2 to skip)
By Mads Lennon
This weekend's most exciting release, in my humble opinion, is Dead Boy Detectives, a charming, quirky, and queer new series set in The Sandman universe and based on a DC comic series. If you're looking for something to fill the Riverdale, Supernatural, or Nancy Drew-shaped hole in your heart, I highly recommend this supernatural series!
Here's what to watch on Netflix this weekend.
Dead Boy Detectives
WATCH! Sharing a universe with hit Netflix series The Sandman from Neil Gaiman, Dead Boy Detectives is a delightfully bingeable new supernatural horror show aimed at a slightly younger audience than its predecessor. It follows two teenage ghost boys and a psychic medium as they take on various supernatural cases to help other ghosts move onto their respective afterlives.
Dead Boy Detectives is also based on a comic series from the DC imprint Vertigo. Characters from the world previously appeared on Max series Doom Patrol, with Ruth Connell even reprising her role as the Night Nurse in the Netflix show. Keep your eyes peeled from some fun cameos from The Sandman, too!
King Richard (2021)
WATCH! This biographical sports film stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father of world-famous tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. Considered one of the best movies of 2021, the film received high praise from critics and viewers. The film received six Academy Award nominations with Will Smith winning an Academy Award for Best Actor. Beginning on the tennis courts of Compton, California, King Richard centers on Richard's determination to train his daughters and write them into history.
City Hunter
SKIP! Netflix has produced yet another live-action adaptation of a manga with its new action film City Hunter, based on the popular series that has sold over 50 million copies in Japan. Unfortunately, City Hunter lacks the charm of Netflix's recent One Piece adaptation and ends up being too cartoonish, to the point it feels messy and disjointed. Fans of the manga might still want to check it out however, especially to see Ryohei Suzuki as the premier "sweeper" Ryo Saeba as he tackles high-stakes cases in the underworld of modern-day Tokyo.
Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut
SKIP! Hack Your Health is one of those documentaries that will likely only appeal to a certain niche of people, but it features a scientist from University College Cork who is an expert on all things gut health. Light-hearted yet still informative, this doc aims to "demystify" the role that our gut health plays into our overall wellbeing, including our moods and more.
The Asunta Case
WATCH! Another true-crime-turned-crima-drama series, The Asunta Case is Netflix's latest captivating original based on a true story, this one on the 2001 murder of a young woman named Asunta Fong Yang. Adopted as a baby from China by a well-off couple living in Spain, Asunta is later discovered dead 13 years later and her adoptive parents were arrested for her murder. This investigative thriller series looks into one of Spain's most shocking true crimes.
