Brie Larson's Oscar-winning performance is a must-watch on Netflix in August 2024

Based on the 2010 novel of the same name written by Emma Donoghue, Room premiered in 2015 to critical acclaim. The incredibly emotional film stars Brie Larson as Joy, a mother who was kidnapped and has been held hostage for seven years. She lives in a backyard shed with her five-year-old son Jack, whose father is the man who abducted her and repeatedly assaults her. Jack has never seen the outside world and all he knows is their small shed, which they call "Room."

The movie is an unflinching look at abuse and trauma, but it's also a heartfelt story of a mother trying to create the best life possible for her child. The wonderful Jacob Tremblay portrays Jack and also received rave reviews for his performance.

As of Aug. 1, Room is available to stream on Netflix, and I'd highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. But definitely have the tissues ready if you do check it out, because if you couldn't already tell by the description, this is an intense film that can be very hard to watch. I also want to make sure to provide a trigger warning for our readers. As mentioned, Joy is sexually assaulted throughout Room and while it's not depicted graphically, it is still depicted. The movie is rated R.

Room is a heavy watch, but also a heartfelt one

Room received glowing reviews from both critics and general audiences when it was released nearly 10 years ago, and it currently holds a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. It received a long list of award nominations, including Best Picture at the Academy Awards and Best Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes. Larson took home both the Oscar and the Globe for Best Actress, among other awards, while Tremblay won Best Young Actor/Actress at the Critics Choice Awards. All the acclaim and award wins were certainly deserved
