One Piece

The One Piece live-action series is hands down one of the best new Netflix original shows that came out in 2023. This is actually surprising to say because live-action adaptations of Japanese manga series don't usually turn out well. Remember the Death Note live-action movie on Netflix? An epic failure.

I think one of the main reasons why the One Piece live-action series worked so well is because the original manga author, Eiichiro Oda, was involved in the filmmaking process. We have to also give it up to the creative team as a whole. Show creators Matt Owens and Steven Maeda used their talents to create something amazing.

The casting was spot-on as well. I honestly can't think of any other actor besides Iñaki Godoy to play the extremely high-spirited and optimistic young pirate, Monkey D. Luffy. Then, you had Emily Rudd from the Fear Street film series taking over the role of Nami and Mackenyu as skilled master swordsman Roronoa Zoro. To complete the Straw Hat Pirates crew, you had Jacob Gibson as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

The first season saw Luffy assembling his own pirate crew, and setting sail across the ocean in search of the legendary treasure, the One Piece. The ragtag pirate crew also had several enemies to defeat throughout the season.

Luckily, we haven't seen the last of the Straw Hat Pirates because One Piece season 2 is officially happening at Netflix. So if you haven't already watched season 1, you might want to get to it soon.
