Sometimes, trying to find movies that work for the whole family is difficult. They’re either too graphic or scary for the younger members of the family, or they’re too kiddy-ish for the teenagers. Netflix is bringing some great family movies throughout September 2024, though.

There is a mixture of animated and live action throughout the month. There are older and newer movies to check out, so there’s no need for kids to say “we’ve already watched this one” to get out of family movie night.

Here are the top picks of family movies throughout September 2024. And yes, some of the releases have happened today, Sunday, Sept. 1!

Sonic the Hedgehog

Yes, we start with the 2020 movie Sonic the Hedgehog. This is one that we weren’t sure what to think of going into it. Maybe having lower expectations helped it succeed so much.

Sonic finds himself in the human world, and he decides to just enjoy it. There’s a lot to love. That is until he accidentally knocks out the power grid. Now he has got the attention of the crazy and lonely Dr. Robotnik, who wants to use Sonic’s abilities to take over the world.

Chicken Run

When a group of chickens are doomed to a life of laying eggs on a Yorkshire chicken farm, most of them just accept it in Chicken Run. Then a flamboyant American rooster arrives. Suddenly everything changes. The hens hope that the rooster can teach them how to fly so that they can escape.

Of course, chickens can’t fly. However, they will do whatever they can to escape, especially when a chicken-pie making machine is installed. Now their need becomes urgent if they want to stay alive.

Chicken Run arrived on Netflix today.

Shark Tale

While Finding Nemo quickly became the more popular of the animated fish movies, there is something to love about Shark Tale. It follows Oscar, a pint-sized fish with grand aspirations. However, he wants to gain his goals with the least work possible, and that means creating stories.

He ends up boasting about being the one to kill Frankie, a great white shark with mob connections that is accidentally killed. Well, Frankie’s dad hears all about it and sends out his henchmen to get vengeance for the death of his son. Uh oh!

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Now yes, this movie is best watched at Halloween with some of the horror elements to it, but it is good fun throughout the year. Wallace and Gromit start up their first pest control business, and they quickly land a client in Lady Tottington.

There’s a problem with a rabbit eating all the crops in town. Lady Tottington needs Wallace and Gromit to take down the rabbit. There is certainly a hilarious twist toward the end in typical Wallce and Gromit style. The animation is also so different to the rest as it uses clay figures for it all.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is on Netflix today.

Uglies

Uglies is more for the older kids in the house, as it is PG-13. However, it’s going to be a great story about beauty standards and the way the world is going. It’s based on a novel of the same name by Scott Westerfield, and it offers something for dystopian fans.

Tally is turning 16 in a world where everyone is forced to have cosmetic surgery to live in society. Everyone is “pretty” in this world. However, when Tally’s friends show her what happens after cosmetic surgery, she decides that she will live on the outside while on a journey to find a missing friend.

Uglies is coming to Netflix on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Jaws

Technically, the Jaws movies are rated PG. I’d say they are more PG-13, but that’s based on how terrified my eight-year-old would get watching this. My 12-year-old would love the movies, and I’m likely watching them with her this long weekend.

The Jaws movies bring us a terrifying shark that kills everyone. It all starts with the shark killing a woman, leading to the debate over whether to close the beach or not. It’s safety vs. money, and money wins. So, it leads to three men going out to kill the killer shark, leading to a fight of man vs. beast.

All three Jaws movies are on Netflix today.
