Patrick Melrose premiered on Showtime back in May 2018. It's a television adaptation of English author and journalist Edward St Aubyn's semi-autobiographical Patrick Melrose book series. Consisting of five hour-long episodes, the drama series takes place over five decades from the '60s to the early 2000s and revolves around a wealthy Englishman named Patrick Melrose and his attempts to overcome his alcohol and drug addictions, which stem from his toxic upbringing.
Cumberbatch stars as the titular character, with Sebastian Maltz, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hugo Weaving, Jessica Raine, Pip Torrens, Prasanna Puwanarajah, Holliday Grainger, Indira Varma as Anne Moore, Anna Madeley, Blythe Danner, Celia Imrie, Harriet Walter, Allison Williams, Morfydd Clark, and Marcus Smith joining him in the cast. Edward Berger, who is best known for writing and helming the epic anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front, directed the show from scripts written by well-known British novelist and screenwriter David Nicholls.
Critics praised Cumberbatch for his outstanding performance in the series. Below, we shared what some critics had to say about his performance via Rotten Tomatoes:
