Alex Garland's Civil War isn't on Netflix, but here's where it will stream after theaters

From the director of movies like Annihilation, Ex Machina, and Men, comes a bold new dystopian film starring Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and more. Civil War has everyone talking right now, especially since the film just released in theaters nationwide on April 12. But sadly, Netflix subscribers won't be able to watch Civil War at home.

Currently, you can only see Civil War at the cinemas, but even though other A24 movies are on Netflix, like X and Bodies Bodies Bodies, the Garland-directed film is not expected to go to Netflix in the future thanks to a new deal between A24 and HBO.

Civil War will stream on Max later this year

New A24 titles will stream exclusively on HBO and Max under a new deal penned at the end of 2023. Per Variety, the terms of this new agreement include sending A24 movies to the Max streaming service as part of the U.S. pay-one TV output.

Previously, A24 had an agreement with Showtime, but that has since come to an end. Movies like the acclaimed Priscilla are already available to stream on Max and The Iron Claw is also expected to arrive on the streaming service soon. Priscilla initially released in theaters in November 2023 and arrived on Max in February 2024.

Given that four-month trajectory, we anticipate that Civil War will arrive on Max by late summer, potentially August or early September.

Here's what critics are saying about Civil War

Set in a dystopian future where the United States has descended into a Second American Civil War under the dictatorship of a new president that has just entered his third term, the film follows a group of military-embedded journalists who must get to the White House before the rebels descend.

Thus far, critics have been rather polarized when it comes to Civil War, though the movie has earned a Certified Fresh seal of approval from Rotten Tomatoes with an overall approval score of 86%. It seems like most people like the movie, even if some find the message to be rather timid in its delivery.

One thing critics do agree on is that Kirsten Dunst delivers an exceptional performance as the film's lead. The movie has also been described as thought-provoking, with many of its themes timely and relevant to the current political landscape.
