Adam Sandler is an astronaut and Phil Rosenthal eats brain curry, 7 new releases on Netflix this weekend Mar. 1-3
By Mads Lennon
Can you believe it's already March? It feels like 2024 is flying by, but at least March is shaping up to be an exciting month for Netflix subscribers with shows like 3 Body Problem and The Gentlemen on the horizon.
To kick off the month, Netflix has added several older titles like The Amazing Spider-Man movies, all five seasons of The Jamie Foxx Show, Love & Basketball, National Lampoon's Animal House, and Step Brothers. Check out all of the titles added on March 1 right here.
But for those looking for specific recommendations going into the weekend, here's what's new to Netflix between March 1-3.
Spaceman
Adam Sandler teams up with Maestro's Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano for this meditative science fiction drama film following an astronaut (Sandler) discussing his marriage with a strange creature (voiced by Dano) old as time itself hiding in the bowels of his ship. Based on the early critical reception to Spaceman, this is bound to be a divisive film.
With some praising Sandler's soulful performance and the overall smart script, others felt the movie played it too safe, waffling somewhere between good and bad and landing in forgettable terrain. Sandler will fans will want to check this one out, if only to see him doing something different than the norm, especially if you liked some of his other dramatic films like Punch Drunk Love or Uncut Gems.
Somebody Feed Phil season 7
Phil Rosenthal is back for more globe-trotting escapades in the seventh season of his successful travel series Somebody Feed Phil. The latest season is bigger than ever, with eight episodes for fans to enjoy versus the usual five or six.
This time around, Rosenthal will visit places like Dubai, Iceland, Kyoto, Scotland, Taipei, and The "Real" Orlando. He'll sample diverse dishes like the brain curry and porchetta, and at least one memorable occasion sees him being entertained by a candle... made of foie gras!
Blood and Water season 4
The popular South African crime drama series Blood and Water finally returns for its fourth season after over a year between seasons. After the bloody Molapo house debacle in the season 3 finale, Puleng and her half-sister Fiks just want to move on and enjoy their senior year, but the past isn't quite done with them yet.
The trailer shows Puleng hooking up with a handsome new guy (played by Elite star André Lamoglia) but someone records their tryst and starts blackmailing her with it. We also get a tease of the new Parkhurst principal and what looks like a heartbreaking fight between Puleng and Fiks. It looks like whoever is targeting them could end up doing irreparable harm to their relationship.
The Tourist season 2
The Tourist season 1 ended with an explosive and twisted finale episode that revealed our leading man has really been a villain all along. Well, his past self was anyway. Elliot (Jamie Dornan) is forced to come face-to-face with his past and one of his victims, a mysterious woman named Elena Pascal (Victoria Haralabidou).
Season 2 takes Elliot and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) to Ireland where they dig further into his past and find themselves embroiled in a dangerous family feud. The second season of The Tourist already aired previously in the UK, but Netflix is distributing the show internationally, so this weekend marks the first time the new episodes will be available to US viewers.
American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders
Another true crime docuseries was added to Netflix this past week, this time digging into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of journalist Danny Casolaro. Spread across four episodes, American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders divulges conspiracies related to some of the 20th century's most significant political scandals.
Much of the documentary series highlights a clandestine organization referred to as "The Octopus," a group with connections to stolen spy software and a series of unsolved murders. The docuseries is from Jay and Mark Duplass' company Duplass Brothers Production and Stardust Frames.
Code 8 Part II
A sequel to the 2019 movie, Code 8 Part II sees the return of cousins Robbie and Stephen Amell as Connor Reed and Garrett Kelton, respectively. The sci-fi action movie from director Jeff Chan is set in the fictional Lincoln City, a place where a small percentage of the population possesses special abilities.
Garrett and Connor come into play when a teen girl (Sirena Gulamgaus) witnesses the police covering up the murder of her brother. She turns to the ex-con and his former partner for protection, and together, they try to get justice for her and her family. The first movie is not a Netflix Original, but is available to watch on the streaming service if you need a refresher before checking out the new one.
