Netflix has been licensing a lot of older movies and shows lately.

Netflix releases tons of new original movies as well as licensed movies on its platform every month. In January 2024, we've seen the streamer release films such as The Kitchen, Society of the Snow, Good Grief, Lift, School of Rock, some John Wick movies and two of the Jurassic Park movies. And that's not all!

But while the monthly drops are lovely, you might not always recognize some of the movies that are released. That's how we feel now in this month. There are so many random movies on Netflix that we've never heard of, but are looking forward to watching. Some are even in the top 10.

The Hill

The Hill currently holds the No. 1 spot on Netflix's top 10 movie list, and it doesn't look like it'll be removed from the list anytime soon. Based on a true story, The Hill follows aspiring baseball player Rickey Hill, who was born with a degenerative spinal disease. Viewers watch as Rickey works to overcome any obstacles in his way so that he can pursue his dream of becoming a professional baseball player.

Captain Marvel star Colin Ford plays the role of Rickey Hill, while Emmy-nominated actor Dennis Quaid portrays Pastor Hill, Rickey's father. Joelle Carter, Randy Houser, Jesse Berry, Bonnie Bedelia, and Scott Glenn are also in the biographical sports drama film.

Blood and Bone

Another movie currently ranking on the top 10 movie list on Netflix is Blood and Bone. It's a martial arts film following an ex-con named Isaiah Bone, who moves to Los Angeles and joins the local underground fighting world to fulfill a promise to a dead friend. Michael Jai White, who is known for starring in Tyler Perry's movies Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too?, plays the protagonist. Julian Sands, Eamonn Walker, Dante Basco, Nona Gaye, Shannon Kane, Michelle Belegrin, and Bob Sapp also join White in the cast.

Queen Bees

If you need a good laugh, make sure to check out Queen Bees on Netflix. It's a romantic comedy following a headstrong senior named Helen Wilson, who is forced to temporarily stay in a retirement home while her house undergoes repairs. But when Helen arrives at the retirement community, she quickly finds herself having a hard time fitting in because of a clique of mean girls who are called the "Queen Bees." Academy Award-winning actress Ellen Burstyn stars in the leading role of Helen Wilson in the rom-com, while the rest of the cast includes James Caan, Ann-Margret, Christopher Lloyd, Jane Curtin, Loretta Devine, and Elizabeth Mitchell.


Freaks is a 2018 sci-fi film that was recently added to Netflix on Jan. 17. 7-year-old Chloe Lewis has been kept inside her house by her paranoid father for her entire life, until one day, she finally gets to experience the outside world. But when she finally gets that taste of freedom, she soon realizes why her dad had her locked away. She has special abilities, and people are out to get her. Into the Wild actor Emile Hirsch plays the role of Henry Lewis, Chloe's father. In addition, Lexy Kolker plays the protagonist, Chloe Lewis. Other actors in the cast are Bruce Dern, Grace Park, and Amanda Crew.

  • Dinner (2016) - It's a thriller film. The synopsis for the movie reads, "Two old friends and their partners gather for a celebratory meal, where a fifth guest stirs up secrets that threaten to bring down both relationships."
  • Escape Plan: The Extractors (2019) - It's an action-adventure movie, and the third and final installment in the Escape Plan film series. The synopsis reads, "Veteran security expert Ray Breslin must rescue a tech giant's daughter and his own girlfriend from an impenetrable prison."
