3 exciting new true crime titles to watch on Netflix in May 2024
By Carla Davis
Netflix has some more true crime documentaries coming up this month, and we are here to tell you all about three that you shouldn’t miss. As true crime followers know all too well, Netflix’s documentaries and docuseries are thoroughly researched and compellingly presented.
Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the story of Cesar Roman (May 10)
This three-part docuseries presents the fascinating true crime tale of Spanish chef Cesar Roman. Roman lived in Madrid when he was accused of murdering his girlfriend, 25-year-old Heidi Paz. After killing Paz, he dismembered her body. Following the grisly crime, Roman left Madrid, fleeing to Zaragoza, where he began working at a restaurant under a fake name.
Three months later, Roman was captured, and he finally went to trial in 2021. If the tale is laid out in usual Netflix fashion, viewers will hear interviews from law enforcement, eyewitnesses and family members, and will see archival video footage.
Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal (May 15)
For those not in the know, The Ashley Madison Agency was an online dating service with a twist: It was marketed to people already married or in a relationship, who were interested in having an affair. Ashley Madison’s slogan was brief and to the point, reading “Life is short. Have an affair.”
In July of 2015, Ashley Madison was infiltrated by computer hackers who managed to snag email address, home addresses, names, credit card info and even members’ sexual fantasies. The hackers promised to post everything online if the company was not closed down immediately.
A week later, a short list of customers’ names was posted, and on Aug. 18, all user data was released. Interestingly, many of the hacked customers had paid a $19 fee in order to have all of their data deleted.
The three-episode series takes a look at the whole story of the rise and fall of Ashley Madison, and “what happened when people’s darkest desires and sexual secrets were exposed for the whole world to see.”
Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult (May 29)
Social media superstar TikTok has amassed millions of followers and remained popular for quite some time now. But have you ever heard of 7M? It was founded by Robert Shinn, who also founded the Shekinah Church.
The church and Shinn were accused of operating a cult, with the members comprised of TikTok dancers. Many dancers with 7M have allegedly been cut off from their families and friends, and are being controlled by Shinn.
Although information on the documentary is sparse, Netflix’s synopsis indicates that “dancers and members" have escaped the cult, and “come together to put a stop to the cycle and heal."
