After binge-watching through the first season of 3 Body Problem on Netflix, I'm sure many fans are eager to find out what's in store for the future of the show. Unfortunately, we don't know for sure that the series is going to be renewed for a second season but considering the amount of work that went into setting up the next two books in the series during season 1, it seems like creators D.B. Weiss, David Benioff, and Alexander Woo are preparing to continue their show for the long haul.
Spoilers ahead for 3 Body Problem
Obviously you should turn back now if you haven't finished watching all eight episodes of 3 Body Problem season 1 yet as we will be discussing some of the events that happen in the final episodes of the season.
3 Body Problem paves the way for The Dark Forest
The first season of the Netflix series introduces several storylines that don't actually happen until the second and third books in Cixin Liu's acclaimed trilogy Remembrance of Earth's Past, the series that the Netflix show is inspired by.
Namely, the storyline involving Will Downing and the Staircase Project doesn't really come to fruition until the third book, Death's End, while Saul becoming a Wallfacer is a significant plot in book two, The Dark Forest.
Based on her story arc, it looks like Jin Cheng is the show's version of Cheng Xin, a character who also becomes very important in the third book of the series.
Saul seems to be taking over Luo Ji's storyline
Based on the direction of the series, we can pretty much confirm that the character of Saul Durand is getting Luo Ji's storyline from the books. Several scenes from the final episodes of season 1 were pulled directly from the pages of The Dark Forest.
In season 2, we should anticipate seeing Saul continue his duties as a Wallfacer and slowly come to accept that this is what his life is going to look like now. I don't want to spoil too much about what's going to happen, but if the show continues following the books then Saul is going to play a pivotal role in helping the human race fight off the San-Ti.
That said, we don't know if Netflix is going to renew the series yet and likely won't get confirmation for a bit based on the viewership numbers. Stay tuned to Netflix Life for more information on the show and any updates!
