20 contestants compete for stardom in Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE (Watch the trailer!)

If you're a fan of music documentaries, then you absolutely must check the new docuseries Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE, which is coming to Netflix on Aug. 21. We shared all the juicy deets about this upcoming Netflix original series below.

If you're chronically online and/or a K-pop fan, chances are you've heard of the new girl group KATSEYE. Well, Netflix decided to team up with HYBE, Interscope Films, and Boardwalk Pictures to create a docuseries showing how the group was formed.

Before we get into what this docuseries is about, it's important to mention that KATSEYE is not a K-pop group. Instead, they are a US-based girl group under the South Korean record label HYBE, which is the same label whose artists include K-pop groups BTS, New Jeans, Le Sserafim, etc. In addition, they're also under the major US record label Geffen Records.

Multi-award-winning director and cinematographer Nadia Hallgren, who is best known for helming the intimate Netflix documentary Becoming, takes on directing duties for Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE. We follow 20 aspiring pop stars from all over the world as they take part in a unique K-pop training and development program in hopes of securing a spot in HYBE and Geffen Records' first-ever global girl group, KATSEYE.

More than 120,000 people from all around the world auditioned, with 20 making the cut to compete in The Debut: Dream Academy, a talent competition reality show that helped narrow down the 20 contestants to only six lucky girls who ultimately made the group. Those six girls are Daniela Avanzini, Manon Bannerman, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel, Sophia Laforteza, and Yoonchae Jeong.

Besides showing the formation of KATSEYE, the Netflix docuseries will also follow the group members as they prepare for their debut EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong), which is set to be released on Aug. 16, 2024. In June 2024, KATSEYE's debut single, "Debut," dropped, followed by a second single titled "Touch" in July. Music videos for each song were also released. You can check them out below.
