Office Romance earns R-rating with strong language and unexpected graphic nudity

Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein star in the Netflix original romantic comedy movie Office Romance, which as the title suggests, centers on two coworkers becoming intimately involved with each other. It's been a while since we received a new rom-com from J.Lo, and there's no doubt this will become one of the star's instant classic titles in the genre.

Lopez stars as Jackie Cruz, the CEO of Air Cruz, an airline that's currently embroiled in a lawsuit. When Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein) joins the team to help with the deposition, sparks begin to fly between him and Jackie. But because of her strict policy about workplace relationships as well as her history, the pair must keep their growing love a secret from everyone at the office.

But just how steamy does Jackie and Daniel's love affair get in Office Romance? Well, Netflix has been using words and phrases like "raunchy" and "NSFW" in the movie's marketing, surely painting a picture for prospective viewers for what to expect. But movies can still surprise you, and this one definitely will! That's why we're explaining the content behind the age rating.

Office Romance rated R by Netflix for sex, nudity, and language

According to the official Office Romance page on Netflix, the movie has been given an R rating and is recommended for mature audiences. The streamer offers "sexual material, language throughout, and graphic nudity" as the reasons for its R rating, but what goes into each of those categories? We're sharing some insight into what to expect from the movie with as few spoilers as possible.

Sex and nudity

Because the central concept of the movie revolves around an adult sexual relationship, there's a certain level of sexuality to be expected from the movie, though not as much as you would think. There are a number of scenes featuring kissing and implied sex between a male and female character, but none of these sequences feature nudity or explicit sexuality.

Early on in the movie, a male character stands in front of a female character and sports an erection. Neither party was anticipating this to happen, and while it's shown from a wide shot, he's fully dressed and there's no nudity. Another scene features the central couple on vacation and it's implied they had sex on the beach. They're in bathing suits, but that's the most nudity the scene includes.

Office Romance contains graphic nudity that will take most viewers by surprise, but this instance of nudity isn't in a sexual context. Later on in the movie, a woman goes into labor and her pubic region is shown in closeup three different times as she gives birth. The third and final closeup shows the baby being born. Be warned that this scene occurs toward the end of the movie.

Language and violence

Perhaps more so than sex, language plays a large role in the R rating. Netflix describes the movie as raunchy, and this is where the raunch comes in. The characters speak with frequent and unflinching expletives, including f-ck, sh-t, and c--t, which is used multiple times in multiple scenes (though not in a derogatory manner). Sex is also spoken about in varied forms of graphic language.

There's a credits sequence that includes a large number of characters explaining their sexual exploits. While none of these exploits are shown, some viewers might not appreciate hearing this very R-rated sexual language. Finally, there's no real violence contained in the movie, though there's a sequence featuring two characters flying through a storm in a small plane that could be triggering.
