Do you want more talent shows? Of course, you do. People would not keep making new ones if we didn't want them. In the case of Netflix, though, the streaming giant is bringing back a familiar one. And not just old episodes, but a complete remake.
Netflix announced that it will bring back Star Search, a show that ran in the 1980s and 1990s, but hasn't produced new shows in 20 years. Ed McMahon once hosted, but won't be the host for various reasons now. (McMahon died in 2009 after a long and fruitful career.)
Like the original, the series will be live, and viewers can vote on who they think should win. The show's previous edition had people call in, but a computer click or text might suffice with today's technology. Netflix has yet to tell us how the votes can be cast.
Netflix set to bring back Star Search after 20 years
If you happen to catch the first run of the show, you will know that contestants don't have to do one thing. This isn't The Voice, which means someone has to sing to earn the supper. Contestants on Star Search can do nearly anything, as long as it is mostly family-friendly.
The show churned out a lot of alums that became quite famous, so, again, unlike The Voice, you probably won't forget who won in a year. Past contestants include Beyoncé, Dave Chappelle, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Adam Sandler.
A couple of those names are intriguing because they mean Star Search will also allow blossoming comedians to appear. While there are tons of stand-up specials, there are few places to see a young comedian work their way up.
There is no release date known for the new series, and the host and judges are also not yet known. One of the great things about the original edition was that the judges brought a lot of character to the show. Let's hope that repeats on the new iteration.
Now, for the fun part. Let's assume you want to apply to be a contestant. You are in luck. If you click here, your world might soon be changed.
