Netflix scores 2 new hit series aiming for season 2 renewals after promising ratings debuts

So far this fall, Netflix has had a busy few weeks of new releases. On top of releasing long-anticipated new seasons of established hits like The Gentlemen and Ryan Murphy's Monster anthology series, the streaming service has debuted more than a few new series and will continue to do so for the rest of the fall season. Thankfully, two new shows have already made their mark as hits.

Netflix released the reality competition series Wonka's The Golden Ticket and the comedy revival series A Different World during the last full week of September 2026, and both series have debuted with promising starts on the streamer's Global Top 10 English-Language TV Shows chart. If you're hoping for these shows to return with second seasons, this is a positive sign.

While Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story took the No. 1 position for the second week in a row, Wonka's The Golden Ticket started at No. 2 with 4.6 million views and 28.3 million hours viewed and A Different World followed closely behind at No. 4 with 4.2 million views and 23 million hours viewed. The new shows' numbers might not be as big as Monster's 14.5 million views, but they aren't bad either.

The fact that both series debuted on the Global Top 10 at all, especially within the Top 5 of the chart, is already a great achievement. Sometimes, new Netflix shows can miss the worldwide chart altogether, like the recent premiere of Leanne season 2. The sitcom didn't manage to make an appearance on the chart until its second week then quickly fell off the week after.

It can also be easy for viewers to look at these figures and assume that because that the debut viewership numbers aren't comparable to the likes of Monster or other Netflix shows pulling double-digit views after four days that they are in trouble. But it's worth considering that Wonka's The Golden Ticket and A Different World will be measured by Netflix with a separate set of standards.

As a reality competition series, Wonka isn't as expensive to produce as a series like the star-studded drama Monster (though as a branded competition series, it boasts a bigger price tag than the likes of Love is Blind and Age of Attraction). Seeing as Wonka held its own against the two aforementioned reality series and continues to draw eyeballs on the stateside Top 10, a season 2 seems like a lock.

Likewise, Netflix tends to have a different criteria when it comes to its original comedy series. A Different World came in a little lower than some might have anticipated as a legacy offshoot, but the numbers are still nothing to belittle, especially not when most of Netflix's biggest comedies have returned for new seasons with numbers right on par with the revival's 4.2 million start.

Not to mention, A Different World has held the peak position on the daily Top 10 shows ranking in the United States since its launch, meaning fans are still discovering the series and making their way through their binge-watch. All in all, the comedy and the reality competition series appear to have continued Netflix's big push into fall on a good note that makes a case for season 2 renewals.
