As we get deeper into 2026, Netflix is continuing to make hard decisions about the future of its original content. A number of renewals have already been announced this year, with the first official renewal belonging to Emily in Paris season 6 and others including The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 and A Man on the Inside season 2. Beyond the exciting renewals, there have also been cancellations.

According to What's on Netflix, the latest Netflix original series to get hit with cancellation is Tyler Perry's comedy series Miss Governor. As of this writing, Netflix hasn't formally announced the cancellation, but the writing did seem to be on the wall given the state of the show's viewership situation. If a season 2 renewal had been announced, fans probably would have been surprised.

Netflix allegedly canceled Miss Governor, no season 2 planned

Miss Governor first made its premiere on Netflix in May 2025 under the title She the People, but by the time the second half of season 1 arrived in August 2025, the title had been quietly changed without fanfare to avoid a trademark lawsuit. Unfortunately, the title change didn't appear to help attract the political comedy series to a new audience and help boost its profile.

The series struggled to connect with any audience really. Even though Miss Governor ranked in the daily top 10 most popular rankings on Netflix in a few countries around the world, the series failed to rank in the global top 10. That's generally the chart that the streaming service wants its original content to perform well in order to renew them for additional seasons.

What's on Netflix reports that Miss Governor globally brought in 35.6 millions hours watched, which translates to 8.6 million views. While those numbers don't sound bad, keep in mind that they are cumulative. That's the number of views the series earned cumulatively from its premiere to the end of 2025. For comparison, The Night Agent season 3 just got 8.4 million views in four days.

The series centers on Antoinette Dunkerson (Terry J. Vaughn), who pursues a career as Lieutenant Governor and must grapple with the reality of being a woman in the male-dominated political field and the fact that her family might not be prepare for the limelight. All told, the comedy topped out with 16 total episodes that are still worth watching, even with the mostly negative reception.

Miss Governor's trajectory from a hopeful new comedy series on Netflix to a short-lived series that didn't get enough attention pales in comparison to Perry's other series output on the streaming service. Perry launched the drama-soap Beauty in Black in October 2024, and the series quickly took the world by storm. After two successful seasons, the series will end with its third and final season.
