Netflix's new crime drama just hit the Top 10—and it should be on your watch list

If there's one particular genre of television show that has become almost synonymous with Netflix originals in the part few years, it's most definitely action thrillers. Audiences have grown to love the escapism and adventurous nature of an action-packed movie or show, one that can transport you from your couch right into the chaotic mix with your chosen hero (or anti-hero!).

This year, Netflix has already provided us with a number of original movies and shows that are thrilling and full of action, whether it's the latest season of The Night Agent or the blockbuster sci-fi movie War Machine. But there's another page-to-screen series adaptation that will have viewers on the edge of their seats piecing together a mystery, and that's Jo Nesbo's Detective Hole.

Detective Hole debuts as a hot new Netflix crime drama

Based on author Jo Nesbo's series of Harry Hole novels, Detective Hole specifically adapts the story of the fifth book, The Devil's Star. The series debuted on Thursday, March 26 alongside the perhaps buzzier new horror miniseries Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which was executive produced by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers. Still, it debuted in the Top 10!

While Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen debuted on the daily Top 10 most popular shows ranking in the United States at No. 4, Detective Hole was right on the American show's tail. The Nordic noir series ranks at No. 6 the day after its premiere, and it's sure to continue climbing toward the top of the chart over the weekend and in the coming week after its release.

The series stars Tobias Santelmann as the titular Detective Harry Hole, a police detective in Oslo with his fair share of personal problems who become wrapped up in a dangerous situation. While tracking down a serial killer that has been elusive and wreaking havoc, Detective Hole also grapples with the corruption of his fellow detective Tom Waaler, who is played by For All Mankind star Joel Kinnaman.

As a foreign series that's not in English, it's unlikely that most American audience will recognize other cast members in Detective Hole apart from Joel Kinnaman, but across the nine-episode first season, there's an ensemble cast bringing this world to life. Just like Netflix's hits The Night Agent and The Lincoln Lawyer, this series has the potential to become a long-running sensation.

Nesbo's work was previously adapted for the screen with the 2017 film The Snowman, which starred Michael Fassbender in the role of Harry Hole. The movie also starred Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Ronan Vibert, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons. However, additional Harry Hole movies weren't made following the movie's lackluster performance.

Since there are 13 total novels in Nesbo's series, it's entirely likely that if Detective Hole continues to perform well on Netflix, the streaming service could bring it back for another season and adapt one of the other books.
