Netflix might have actually found its perfect Stranger Things replacement

As one of the most popular Netflix shows of all time, Stranger Things has left a massive hole in Netflix's lineup. While no show will ever truly replace Stranger Things, it sounds like Netflix has found the perfect show for Stranger Things to get excited about next!

Deadline recently reported that Netflix is developing Ravenloft, a new Dungeons & Dragons show that will be set in the Demiplane of Dread. John August, best known for writing Charlie's Angels, Corpse Bride, and more, is writing the new Netflix series.

Netflix hasn't officially unveiled the synopsis or shared what Ravenloft will be about, but Deadline shared what to expect in the upcoming series.

"Described as a prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance, Ravenloft and its Domains of Dread tackle adventure through character-driven stories of dark magic and supernatural intrigue. At its heart, the series follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains."

We don't know a ton of details about the Ravenloft at the moment, but we do know the series is executive produced by Alfonso Cuarón. That's quite the creative team behind the project.

I'm very eager to see how Ravenloft fans feel about the Netflix show. The campaign setting that was created by Tracy and Laura Hickman decades ago is incredibly popular.

Why Stranger Things fans should be excited for Ravenloft

It sounds like Ravenloft is going to be an epic fantasy series, and off the bat, that should be exciting for Stranger Things fans. As Deadline reports, Ravenloft slots in quite nicely in Netflix's lineup along with Wednesday, which is currently filming its third season in Ireland.

Netflix does a lot of TV shows really well, but unfortunately, really nerdy, fantasy, and horror shows are not one of them. We've seen Netflix take a stab at a lot of genre shows, and many have just missed the mark. The two exceptions are basically Stranger Things and Wednesday. We need more shows like those two shows, especially after Stranger Things has ended and Wednesday doesn't seem like it's going to run for five seasons.

We all know about the Dungeons & Dragons tie-ins within the Stranger Things universe. The young characters perceive the supernatural and horrific things around them through the lens of the game. We even saw Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) mention the character and show his friends the mini of Strahd in the show's final sequence in the Wheeler's basement.

Obviously, we didn't know at the time that Netflix was planning a series about that vampire Mike was talking about. There was another Dungeons & Dragons show in the works, but that's not happening anymore, according to the report.

Other than Castlevania and Midnight Mass, which were both very good in their own right, Netflix hasn't really gone big for a vampire show. There's so much opportunity with this rich story to make something truly incredible. Hopefully, Ravenloft will be able to do Dungeons & Dragons justice.

As a Stranger Things fan, I think the show left some Dungeons & Dragons lore on the table, especially with all of the Vecna, Eddie Munson, demobats, and vampire theories. This show could have gone in a very different direction for the final season, but it went more sci-fi at the end with the whole wormhole storyline.

So, where do we go from here? That's a good question! It looks like the series is in development, but that can mean a lot of things. The scripts will come first, and then there are a lot more steps until the show moves into production. Then, it's an even longer wait. To bring a fantasy series like this to life, it's going to take a lot of VFX and post-production work. What I'm trying to say is that we're going to get a lot more updates about Ravenloft before we see it, but this is a great step in the right direction.
