It's safe to say that limited series remain some of the most reliable and highly viewed original content on Netflix. Whether it's a hard-hitting drama or a thrilling mystery, viewers all over the world are always tuning into the latest Netflix original miniseries. The streaming service just ordered its latest limited series while also replacing its former Emmy Award-winning star.

Shameless and The Bear star Jeremy Allen White was first announced as the lead of the upcoming limited series Enigma Variations in January 2025. However, by the end of the year, White was revealed to have departed the project, though reasons for his exit aren't available. The Bear wrapped filming on its final season in March, which likely wouldn't have conflicted with this production.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson starring in Enigma Variations on Netflix

However, Netflix gave Enigma Variations the official green light on March 19 and announced Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the limited series' new star. It's a quick turnaround from when White's exit was first reported to when Taylor-Johnson replaced him, but it makes sense that Netflix would want to lock down a new leading man as the show is expected to begin production in June 2026.

Based on the André Aciman novel of the same name, Enigma Variations centers on a character name Paul across a 10-year exploration of his masculinity and sexuality. Paul has life-changing and intimate relationships with both women and men that help redefine who he thinks he is and leads him to question whether he has actually found "the one."

Netflix compares the Enigma Variations limited series adaptation to the film adaptation of Aciman's Call Me By Your Name, calling it "sweaty, poignant, and lust-filled." The streamer also teases that the upcoming series will be "just as full of yearning" as the Oscar-nominated film. If you've read the book, then you definitely know what to expect from Paul's story coming to life onscreen.

Enigma Variations comes from executive produced and writer A.K. Shuman, director Oliver Hermanus, and executive producers Michael Ellenberg, Lindsey Springer, André Aciman, and Monica Levinson. Since the book takes place in Italy, New York, and England as Paul travels the globe, the series will likely also film in these locations and possibly others.

Netflix hasn't shared additional details about the upcoming series, including how many episodes there will be and who else will starring alongside Taylor-Johnson. But as pre-production continues and gears up for cameras to begin rolling this summer, there were surely be lots more updates to come. Additionally, don't expect the series to hit our watch lists until sometime in late 2027.
