Netflix releases new content every day, but Thursdays have become the unofficial highlight of the week. On this particular day, the streaming giant usually drops its most highly anticipated shows. It could be returning favorites or brand-new originals. This week isn't any different.
On Feb. 12, Netflix released a new show that's already got everyone talking. I personally got the opportunity to stream this series in advance via screeners, and boy, it does not disappoint! Perhaps you watched the hit teen sitcom Derry Girls. Well, the show I'm talking about comes from the same brilliant mind behind that Netflix series. That alone should pique your interest, but it’s just the beginning of why you won’t want to miss it.
Titled How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, this series is one of the cleverest, most entertaining new offerings on Netflix right now. With this show, Lisa McGee, the creator of Derry Girls, has taken everything that made her earlier work beloved and evolved it into something bigger, darker, and downright addictive.

How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is not just a straight comedy or your typical crime drama either. It's a genre-bending feast that'll grab you with its humor, thrill you with its twists, and leave you craving the next episode once the screen fades to black. Hopefully, I've really got your attention now. So, what exactly is this show about?
Well, it's about three women who've been friends since they were teens. Their names are Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara. Saoirse is a successful TV writer whose ambition sometimes outpaces her life choices. Robyn is an overworked mom of three. Then, there's Dara, who's basically the glue of the friend group. Life has pulled them in different directions as adults, but the unexpected death of a mutual friend forces them back together in Belfast. And that’s when things start to get really interesting.
They reunite at the wake, but what should have been a somber, reflective day quickly spirals out of control. Eerie moments at the funeral make Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara realize something just doesn’t add up about their estranged friend's death. This then leads them on a wild, unpredictable journey as they try to piece together what really happened.
Roisin Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan, and Caoilfhionn Dunne lead the cast by playing the roles of Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara. Their chemistry alone is enough to carry the series. They really feel like real friends, which makes everything else believable. Also in the cast are other talented actors, including Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Bronagh Gallagher, Darragh Hand, Natasha O'Keeffe, Michelle Fairley, Selin Hizli, Emmett J. Scanlan, and many others.
Overall, there's never a dull moment in How to Get to Heaven from Belfast. You'll find yourself laughing quite a lot at the trio's antics, but the show knows just when to get serious and focus on the mystery as well. It does a good job at keeping that balance while slowly peeling back the layers of the story.
By the end of the eight-episode first season, you'll be left both satisfied and craving more. I'm not going to spoil anything, but I will say that How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 1 ends in a way that pretty much sets up a second season. Fingers crossed, tons of people tune in. Once you watch the first season for yourself, you'll understand why a How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 2 is needed!
All eight episodes of How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 1 are now streaming on Netflix.
