Netflix just picked up a fan-favorite HBO Max series that deserves a second chance

One of the most thrilling parts about being a Netflix subscriber is never knowing what kind of content would be coming around the corner. On top of the streamer's excellent original content, there's also the consistent flow of acquired films and series from past and present, which allows us to consume a vast and diverse variety of titles from all kinds of creators, eras, and genres.

Sometimes, a lot of the most popular content on Netflix oftentimes isn't the original titles but the recent hits and throwbacks that the streaming service has the forethought to bring to their audience. Recently, Netflix has brought other streamers' underrated shows, like Hulu's Shrill and Paramount+'s Lawmen: Bass Reeves, to our watch lists for a second wind, and an HBO Max gem is next.

The Sex Lives of College Girls coming to Netflix in August 2026

From co-creator Mindy Kaling, the HBO Max comedy series The Sex Lives of College Girls begins streaming on Netflix in the United States on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026. It's the first time the HBO Max original series will be available to watch on another streaming service, giving the series a second chance to find a wider audience to appreciate its unique charms and hilarious characters.

Rather than only acquiring a select number of seasons, or simply one season, Netflix will add all three seasons of the series. The Sex Lives of College Girls contains a total of 30 episodes, which is unfortunately short-lived in comparison to other series, but in the end it makes for a rather quick binge-watch even though the show should have lasted much longer.

The series takes place at the fictional Essex College in Vermont as four college freshman — Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), Leighton (Reneé Rapp), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) — become roommates and close friends. Each of these college girls have their own interests, niches, and journeys to navigate while in college, which also includes exploring their sexualities.

In true Mindy Kaling form, The Sex Lives of College Girls provides non-stop laughs from each of the main cast members and the revolving door of supporting and guest stars. The core four gained a new member after Rapp left the series early in the third and final season, becoming replaced with Gracie Lawrence in the role of Kacey, the group's new roommate and friend.

Despite being a semi-popular fan-favorite during its first two seasons, The Sex Lives of College Girls appeared to hit growing pains during its third season with the cast shuffle. HBO Max opted not to renew the series for season 4, and while that was a difficult decision for fans to take in, at least the show didn't end on a cliffhanger and (mostly) wrapped up each of the four characters' storylines.

Being added to Netflix presents The Sex Lives of College Girls an incredible opportunity to be seen by a larger audience since the series will no longer be confined to just HBO Max. This gives the series the second chance it deserves to be appreciated by fans new and old, but don't get your hopes up too high that possible success could lead to some kind of revival. That ship has likely sailed.

Given then Kaling has found success on Netflix with her original series Never Haver I Ever and Running Point, which is going into its third season, it's a no-brainer to shine a light on one of her other modern television classics. Here's to hoping that The Sex Lives of College Girls can go from being a cult favorite in the making to a show that anyone and everyone gets the chance to love.
