If you're looking for a new limited true crime series on Netflix, The Staircase from HBO is probably the new show for you to watch right now.

Netflix has been licensing more and more shows and movies from direct competitors in recent months. A few of those, particularly the HBO shows, are performing quite well on the streaming service. In fact, a newly released HBO crime drama is climbing the ranks of the Netflix Top 10.

Starring frequent Netflix star Toni Collette and Colin Firth, The Staircase was just added to Netflix in December 2025, and it's already moved up to No. 9 on the Netflix Top 10 for TV shows.

The 2022 HBO limited series tells the story of Michael Peterson, an author who was accused of killing his wife, Kathleen Peterson, in 2001. In the series, Firth stars as Michael Peterson, while Collette stars as Kathleen. It's based on the true story of Kathleen and Michael Peterson, along with docuseries series of the same name.

The series follows the case from the time Kathleen was found dead at the bottom of the stairs at the Peterson home all the way through the results of the trial in the season finale.

Antonio Campos created the series for HBO. In addition to Firth and Collette, The Staircase features an incredible cast, including Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Parker Post, Odessa Young, Rosemarie DeWitt, Tim Guinee, Juliette Binoche, Michael Stuhlbarg, Dane DeHaan, and Olivia DeJonge. That's a truly outstanding cast!

The Staircase boasts a 92% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards in 2023. Firth and Collette were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Limited Series.

In addition to the limited series, you can always watch the 2018 docuseries of the same name, which is now available to stream on Netflix right now. There are 10 episodes in the docuseries to watch right now, while the limited series only has eight episodes.

The surge of HBO shows on Netflix comes just days after Netflix placed the winning bid and secured a deal to buy HBO's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. There are still many steps that must take place for Netflix to secure a deal for WBD, but that's what is happening behind the scenes.

The Staircase isn't even the only show on the Netflix Top 10 right now, either. Love & Death starring Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons, and Tom Pelphrey ranks No. 5 on the list, as well.

I have a feeling we'll be see even more HBO shows on this list as more and more HBO and HBO Max shows become available on Netflix. Stay tuned for more information!
