Between the success of Crave and HBO Max's Heated Rivalry and Prime Video's Off Campus, hockey drama series are all the rage right now. There are so many adaptations of fan-favorite hockey romance books coming down the pipeline, including the second season of Netflix's own figure skating drama Finding Her Edge and a new fresh drama series hitting the ice.

While Netflix first announced its upcoming hockey drama series without a title, the streamer has now given the highly anticipated series an official title: The Sticks. Headlined by Echoes and The White Lotus star Michelle Monaghan, the series also now has a release window that takes a premiere before the end of the year off the table. The Sticks makes its debut on Netflix in 2027.

Netflix didn't designate when in 2027 the series would be making its premiere, but based on the fact that filming began in January 2026 and wrapped by May, we can estimate that if the eight-episode show doesn't drop in the early portion of the new year, the hockey players of South Dorothy will skate onto our watch lists by spring. Here's who we'll be meeting and what's in store!

The Sticks on Netflix cast and synopsis

If you're thinking about comparing The Sticks to Heated Rivalry or Off Campus, the similarities pretty much stop at hockey when it comes to the storytelling. But each of the shows' casts have larger ensembles of recurring and supporting characters thanks to the various teammates of the leading hockey players. Netflix's new show has a lot of young hockey players we'll soon get to know.

While we don't know much about the characters or their entanglements, whether familial or romantic, we already have the full main cast of The Sticks, which is as follows:

  • Michelle Monaghan as Harper Sullivan
  • Emilie Bierre as Riley Sullivan
  • Shai Chase as Henry Sullivan
  • Josh MacQueen as Rhett Nelson
  • Costa D'Angelo as Owen Boone
  • Carter Shimp as Austin Ryder
  • Ethan Holder as Cooper Cunningham
  • Isaac Arellanes as Manny Rodriguez
  • Alex MacIsaac as Emma Boone
  • Logan Marshall-Green as Coach Sully
  • Scott Bakula as Coach Brody Hansen

The main cast clearly features a number of the young South Dorothy hockey players as well as a small handful of adults as the coaches, which now includes familiar faces Logan Marshall-Green and Scott Bakula joining Monaghan as the show's stars. Beyond the extensive main cast, The Sticks has also added to its also sizable recurring cast:

  • Bryan Greenberg as Cliff Barnes
  • Chelsea Field as Alice Hansen
  • Patrick Gallagher as Principal Montgomery
  • Alison Araya as Joan Garcia
  • Aman Smardon as Kai Becker
  • Krista Bridges as Frankie Ryder
  • Ben Cotton as Mr. Marchbanks
  • Chloe Avakian as Izzy Miller
  • Caleb Baumann as Elu
  • River Codack as Tyler Walker
  • Angus Albinati as Jack McGrath
  • Callum Orchison as Derek Marchbanks

As previously mentioned, The Sticks isn't a hockey drama in the same way as other currently popular shows are hockey dramas. It's much more in line with The Mighty Ducks if anything else since it's focused on high school hockey players rather than college or professional athletes. The show has more of a family drama and coming-of-age theme than romance as well.

Here's the official synopsis via Netflix's press release: "After tragedy shatters a small Minnesota hockey town, a grieving wife steps behind the bench of the team her husband built, guiding a found family of wounded young athletes through a season of loss, love, and rivalry that will decide whether South Dorothy has anything left to believe in, and who will lead it into its next chapter."

The Sticks takes place in Minnesota as Michelle Monaghan's Harper Sullivan helps overcome the shared grief she and the hockey team her husband left behind feel by leading them through a new, unexpected beginning. As with any sports drama, there will be rivalries, likely within the team and with competitors, but when they all rally together, they will surely be an unbeatable force.
