It's been nearly two years since Netflix announced Outer Banks would be coming to an end with a fifth and final season, but we finally know when the Pogues will reassemble for the final adventure!
Netflix has finally revealed when the final season of Outer Banks will release, confirming that the final season will be released on August 20. The news also comes with the confirmation that the final season will not be split into multiple parts like we saw with season 4, which released in two batches across October and November 24.
Knowing that season 5 will not be broken into two separate parts is certainly exciting and a bit of a relief. While we love a good split season and understand why Netflix breaks some shows up into two parts, it's going to be so nice to get to enjoy the final season of Outer Banks uninterrupted and in one sitting -- yes, we're already planning on watching the final season binge-style!
In addition to now knowing when the final season will arrive, Netflix has also finally given us information about the plot for the final season.
As season 4 came to an end, Outer Banks delivered its most shocking and heartbreaking death yet, with Groff killing JJ in order to make away with the Blue Crown. The closing moments of the season saw JJ dying in Kiara's arms as the show then cut to a montage memorializing JJ as John B and the Pogues vowed to avenge their fallen friend.
Season 5 will find the Pogues reaching their breaking point following JJ's death and forming an unlikely alliance with Rafe to get justice for their fallen friend. Here's how Netflix teases the final season:
"Season 5 finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats. With Chandler Groff still at large, Dalia and the Corsairs closing in, and the Kooks ensuring the Pogues have no home to return to, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo must rely on their scrappy instincts—and an uneasy alliance with Rafe—to keep from falling apart for good. Their mission is now a desperate race to reclaim their future and finally win the freedom they’ve been chasing since the beginning. It’s the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home…one final time."
We also have our first official look at the new season ahead in the form of a teaser, which brings us back to the Outer Banks and serves up an exciting look at what is to come in the final season:
With just ten episodes left, fans should expect our biggest season yet, and there is truly no telling what hurdles the Pogues will face in their final adventure.
One thing that is unclear is whether we'll see Rudy Pankow back in any form for the final season as JJ, but fans can expect to see Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant, Austin North, Fiona Palomo, J. Anthony Crane and Cullen Moss all back for the final season. Hopefully, the writers will find a way to keep JJ's legacy alive even if we don't get a final scene with Pankow as the show comes to a close.
It's certainly going to be strange to get a season of Outer Banks without JJ in the mix, and we're eager to see if the show can stick its landing. As we saw with Stranger Things, it can be hard to stick the landing and craft an ending that satisfies the majority of the fans. We have faith that the Outer Banks creative team will manage to deliver a final season that brings the show's story to a close in a meaningful manner that leaves the fans happy!
