Netflix to end XO, Kitty but there’s still hope for one final chapter

Netflix is reportedly planning to end XO, Kitty, but discussions are underway for a final chapter.

It’s been nearly four months since XO, Kitty season 3 debuted on Netflix, and fans have been anxiously awaiting news about the show’s future. Sadly, it seems our fears have been justified, with Netflix actively planning to bring the show to an end.

According to Deadline, plans are in motion to end XO, Kitty, and ongoing discussions about how the show will end are underway. The good news is that it appears Netflix is working to avoid canceling the show, and Paramount Television Studios recently extended Netflix’s option and also extended the cast’s options in order to provide Netflix with more time to make its renewal decision. The bad news is that this final chapter may not come in the form of a final season.

While a fourth season is still in the cards and being explored as an option, Netflix is considering the possibility of ending XO, Kitty with a wrap-up movie instead of a proper final season. This is an approach that the streamer took with fellow teen comedy Heartstopper, which closed out its run this July with the Heartstopper Forever film

Interestingly, it seems that the decision to close the series with a wrap-up movie might come as a result of the preference of creator Jenny Han. Deadline notes that Han seemed interested in taking a similar approach to XO, Kitty as she is taking with Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty—which will draw to an end with a movie following a three-season run.

At this time, no official decision has been made about XO, Kitty’s future, but it’s clear that the show has reached the end of the road. The question is just how Kitty’s story will wrap up.

It would be a real shame to see XO, Kitty end its run without a proper finale, especially given we’re so close to a natural endpoint for the series. Season 3 ended with Kitty inching one step closer to graduation at the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS) by finishing the first semester of her senior year, with the expectation being that a fourth season could follow Kitty and her friends during the final semester and culminate with their graduation.

The good news is that it seems clear Netflix wants to bring fans closure to the series and doesn’t want to outright cancel the show. This seems to suggest that unless conversations break down between Netflix, Han, and Paramount Television Studios, we should get some sort of closing chapter, be it via a movie or fourth season.

Hopefully, all parties involved will be able to reach an agreement that allows fans the opportunity to say goodbye to Kitty and the gang via a proper final chapter.
