Netflix very much wants to sell us on a new series they are making set in Newfoundland. To be fair, that's fine. Newfoundland is a fine part of Canada, and the Newfies have those weird accents—not weird in a bad way, but in an extremely strange, unique, and cool way.
There is not a lot to do in Newfoundland, though. The general view is that it remains rainy 365 days a year and has a constant drizzle. There is no factual evidence to support that, but that is what part of the series Peaky Blinders implies. Need to commit a crime, go to Newfoundland.
This somewhat plays into the premise of the Netflix series because while humans do not commit a crime, a mysterious sea creature does. He terrorizes a remote Newfoundland town (aren't they all?) and creates a lot of chaos. Shame on him (or her or it).
Josh Hartnett set to star in Netflix's Newfoundland-filmed series
But now the news you have been waiting for. Josh Hartness will be the star of the unnamed series, as Hartnett's character must fight to protect his family and the rest of the town. How brave he must be.
According to Deadline (and, OK...a tweet from Netflix's official handle), Hartnett will play the lead and executive produce. Jesse McKeown creates the series, and he will also serve as showrunner. But let's be honest about McKeown and why we should care about him when it comes to the new Netflix show.
He is amazingly skilled at knowing what works on a show. He has a few previous credits to his name as a producer, but perhaps the best is 19-2. That show takes place in Montreal and is a police drama starring Jared Keeso. You might know Keeso as Wayne from Letterkenny.
The trick is that while Letterkenny is sneaky smart and funny, 19-2 is not at all. Still, the cop drama has fantastically complex and well-crafted interpersonal relationships. It's worth a watch even if you don't want to see the new Netflix series.
But the fact that McKeown is involved with both is a great sign. Hartnett is bound to be great, too. In other words, the show being filmed in Newfoundland might be one of the best churned out by your favorite streamer.
And if you can't wait much longer for new Hartnett stuff, he will next appear in the film Verity, starring opposite Anne Hathaway, which is scheduled for 2026. He is also in Trap, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
