As much as we love binge-watch Netflix's incredible slate of incredible original series and movies, you can't deny diving into the streamer's extensive collection of documentaries. From the stories ripped directly from the headlines to the cold cases that still grip the world, we can't get enough of the unscripted content Netflix continuously delivers right to our watch lists.
But Netflix's documentaries aren't just centered in the true crime world. The streaming service also shines a light on some of the most prominent figures in pop culture, whether it's on screen, on stage, or in sports. We have watched Netflix documentaries on influential artists like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and more pop icons. Next year, it's Jessica Simpson's turn.
Jessica Simpson documentary coming to Netflix in 2027
On Aug. 20, Netflix announced that Robbie Williams and Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now director Joe Pearlman will helm an as yet untitled documentary film about the life and career of Jessica Simpson. Between the Williams and Capaldi docs, the BAFTA-nominated director has had a long history with Netflix, though this will be the singer and entrepreneur's first title with the streamer.

While Netflix hasn't given a firm release date for the documentary, the streaming service confirmed that the film will be released sometime next year. It's unclear how long the doc has been in production, but the streamer shared a photo of Simpson sitting in front of a camera capturing her reality, a throwback for fans who have been following her career since the early days.
Simpson made her debut in the music industry in 1999 with the release of her debut single, the ballad "I Wanna Love You Forever," amid the rush of the bubblegum pop wave on TRL. Honestly, she and her music deserved far better, but you can't deny that she's an iconic staple of millennial culture. Simpson became a tabloid fixture during the 2000s with her marriage to fellow pop star Nick Lachey.
The couple starred in the MTV reality series Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica, resulting in many viral moments that are still quoted to this day, especially Simpson's chicken vs. tuna mix-up. In addition to having a successful music career with hits like "Irresistible" and "With You," Simpson also starred in comedy movies like The Dukes of Hazzard and Employee of the Month and launched her eponymous fashion line, which is still active and has an estimated value of $1 billion.
In 2025, Simpson came back into the music spotlight for the first time since releasing her second Christmas album in 2010. The singer-songwriter released a pair of excellent Americana EPs titled Nashville Canyon and has been touring the new music while also embracing her past hits. She's been steadily reclaiming her voice, career, and story after years of unfair media scrutiny.
Simpson previously opened up about about her life in her best-selling memoir Open Book in 2020, but this will be the first time since in many, many years that she will allow cameras to capture the behind the scenes moments. She's surely expected to dive into her music career, her battle with addiction, her company, her children, and her recent split from husband Eric Johnson.
As production continues and the film gets closer to being released sometime next year, we will surely learn new details, including the title and release date, directly from Simpson and Netflix. Stay tune for more news and updates on the film and more Netflix original releases!
