Martin Scorsese wants his money. Bidding for the rights to fund and then be in charge of the release of his planned Hawaii-set crime film has opened, and Netflix, according to Puck, has the edge of becoming the winner. The cost is going to be significant, though. The budget is expected to be $200 million or more.
The cast is also expected to be fantastic. Dwayne Johnson is set to play a mob boss whose gang fights rival gangs in 1960s and 1970s Hawaii. Johnson, of course, has strong ties to the state as his mother's side of the family is Samoan. Believing he could be a crime lord in Hawaii is easily believable.
Of course, like every Scorsese film, the cast list includes a stellar amount of elite talent. Leonardo DiCaprio is expected to be involved, too. Those are the biggest names known so far, but no Scorsese film has been made with only two known leads. We can be certain there are some Oscar-worthy players involved.
Netflix a frontrunner to acquire new Martin Scorsese crime movie
DiCaprio might be the only concern. Production has not yet started on the Scorsese project, of course, and DiCaprio's schedule is going to keep him very busy. If one takes a gander at IMDB, one can see that the fine actor has 13 upcoming projects. Thir-teen.
Maybe all of those do not get made, especially if they are waiting for DiCaprio, because schedules are going to begin to overlap quite a bit. If he can't do a film because of a delay, maybe the whol movie project folds. Anything is a possibility.
Still, people are going to want to be in Scorsese films. That includes DiCaprio, who has already been featured in a number of the director's projects. He basically is Scorsese's new De Niro. That is a good thing for moviegoers and streamers.
As far as any release date for the untitled project, there won't be anything known for quite some time. Not only has no studio yet bought the rights to the film, the movie has not yet started filming. We are probably looking at a 2026 release, at the earliest.
