It seems fans will be returning to Hawkins much sooner than anyone expected. In a truly wild and unexpected turn of events, Netflix has announced that its animated Stranger Things spinoff, Stranger Things: Tales from '85, will be releasing its previously announced second season this September.

That’s right, Stranger Things: Tales from '85 season 2 is coming sooner than anyone expected, with the follow-up season debuting on September 17, 2026. For those keeping tabs, that’s less than six months after the release of season 1, which debuted earlier this year on April 23.

Season 2’s release date was confirmed with the release of Netflix’s September programming slate and has caught many by surprise, as no one expected we’d get the second season sometime in 2026. Instead, the expectation was that the second season would release sometime in 2027—which would have made perfect sense considering the backdrop for the second season.

Stranger Things: Tales from '85 season 2 will jump ahead a few weeks from the first season, which was set against the backdrop of January 1985, as we enter February and approach Valentine’s Day. That’s right, we’re going to be getting a Valentine’s Day-themed season of a Stranger Things show in September, which is a questionable choice given Netflix could have easily sat on this season until February 2027 to drop the season ahead of the actual Valentine’s Day holiday. Instead, we’re going to get season 2 in September.

In the second season of Stranger Things: Tales from '85, we’ll reunite with Eleven and the gang just ahead of Valentine’s Day when mysterious “ghostly” apparitions and a swarm of hate sprites begin wreaking havoc around Hawkins. Now, it’s up to the Hawkins Investigators Club to get to the bottom of these new paranormal occurrences before a gate to the Upside Down is ripped open again.

Their adventures will take fans to both new and unfamiliar places, including a previously unexplored mine, and will have some fun with the Valentine’s Day theme through a mysterious flower popping up throughout Hawkins.

“We think that the kids are going back to their normal lives, but we start to discover that these flowers are popping up all over Hawkins,” showrunner Eric Robles teased of the new season to Tudum. “Nikki and Max are scheming to sell the flowers all over Hawkins. Now [they] are going to be everywhere, which creates a bigger problem.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how the new mystery ties into the narrative of the show, and we’re definitely excited to book a trip back to Hawkins before the year ends. We just have to wonder if this decision could be a telling indication that Netflix is looking to burn off the remaining episodes of the show.

There is really no reason for Netflix to drop Stranger Things: Tales from '85 season 2 just a few months after the show’s first season premiered, especially given the Valentine’s Day setting for the season. Holding the second season for the new year seems like it would have been the better play.
